On The Shady Marlin, Nick tells Brooke that he’d never ask her to be a person that she is not. She wants to be respected and that’s all he wants too. She laments that she has tried respecting his feelings, but why does she always feel like she is apologizing for things she has done that she doesn’t feel are wrong? And if all she can be is a wife he is ashamed of, maybe she shouldn’t be his wife at all!
At Chucks where all the wedding guests are congregating, Bridget yanks the newspaper out of Corky’s hand as he’s gawking at Brooke’s ad. She tells herself that she’s trying to stay optimistic, but what was her mother thinking? Jackie tells her she is absolutely positive, this is all Stephanie’s doings. And Nicky is bound to realize that too. Bridget points out that Stephanie did NOT pose for this. And Brooke should know that Nick, of all people, wasn’t going to put up with stuff like this. Jackie reminds Bridget that she’s always been their biggest cheerleader, so have a little faith. And the fact that they are together at all is more of Bridget’s doing than anybody else’s.
At Forrester’s, Ridge slaps the magazine ad down and tells his mother that Brooke is going to blame him. Stephanie tells him no, Brooke will know she did it. She will take responsibility for it. And why isn’t he happy; at least the wedding is off? She opines that she doesn’t take in any great delight in hurting Nick or anyone, but a showdown like this was inevitable.
Her phone rings and it is Massimo, still tooling around in his limo. He tells her that when he dropped her off, he doubled back to the marina. He had his driver ask some questions and it seems that Dominick and Brooke are still below deck. She thinks that is good. He says maybe not, no one has run off, nothing has been cancelled, the wedding just seems to be on hold.
Nick asks Brooke is it so wrong to want to keep private things private? She answers that she has a public persona (a copout), people know her face, her name and her history at Forrester. He tells her that they know her with her clothes ON. Doesn’t she know that the dressmaker and Stephanie are using her? Can’t she see that? She tells him that sex sells. And besides the slogan was just tongue-in-cheek anyway. Nick barks to screw the slogan. It’s not about the slogan anyway. “You really don’t get why any man in this world would object to his wife being EXPOSED like that?” She tells him he’s not just any man. He’s the man who is supposed to love her and trust her and UNDERSTAND her. And, if he can’t do that, then what are they doing? She says she has been disapproved of most of her life, but she doesn’t want that in the man that she marries.
Stephanie suggests that perhaps Ridge should go down to the marina. He refutes that, but she continues that she thinks Brooke might need him when Nick walks out on her. He laments that Brooke made one request of him and that was to let her go. He’s going to honor that. Unless she comes back to him of her own free will, there is no hope.
Nick offers that something doesn’t sound right here. Since when did he become this anti-sex freak that wants to keep her under his thumb? She says she didn’t say that. He says well that’s the way it sounds to him. And he tells her he has always enjoyed her thumbing her nose to the world. Remember that. But, it’s Forrester. He likes to call the shots in her life. She remarks that he doesn’t tell her what to do. He barks then it’s okay for him to plaster her naked butt (holding up hands in shape) all over Los Angeles, but not okay for him to object to it? She reminds him that Ridge did NOT do that. He bellows for her NOT to defend him. She’s always doing that and he HATES it. She asks what if it were her idea? Would he have a problem with it then? He argues but it wasn’t her idea. Doesn’t she see that? It wasn’t! And he adds that he loves her unpredictability….he really loves it, but when things like this happens, it drives him CRAZY. He wants to pick up anchor and go to Fiji……alone! He sits down in exasperation. After a long silence, she tells him he can still do that. He glances at her and says she is right because they can’t go on like this. He can’t be the guy who is always saying no. He doesn’t like that guy. And she can’t be the woman who never says no. They have to draw a line somewhere. “What’s it gonna be? What are you willing to give up?”
The Justice of the Peace explains to Jackie and bunch that he really can’t stay. They thank him for being a good sport. Rick thinks he should get back to the airport, but Bridget urges him to stay as she thinks Nick and Brooke may still get married later today. He scoffs that she is the only one who thinks that.
Massimo checks in again with Stephanie and tells her the JOP left, there will be no wedding today. End of story; he’s going to leave. Stephanie turns to Ridge and tells him that it’s official. The wedding is off.
Brooke tells Nick that it shouldn’t be about drawing lines in the sand or making sacrifices. She wants him to feel free to do what makes him happy, and she wants to feel free to do the same. He remarks he wants that too. He wants to make her happy. “I just don’t want THOSE people messing with our lives.” She sits down too and explains that THOSE people are very important to her, and that is not going to change. She says she may not be brilliant in the way she handles them, but nobody really is. And she doesn’t want to lose her career at Forrester. She’s back on top and it feels really good. He tells her he’s glad for her. She asks is he really? Because she is not going to stop pushing the envelope in what they sell or how they sell it. And she doesn’t want to come home to a barrage of threats. He quips that depends on how much dancing in the nude she will be doing with her EX! She tells him none; there’ll be none of that. Ridge knows he has NO chance with her……now Stephanie…..she might be a little more stubborn. He scoffs, “a little stubborn? When that woman dies, she will put her hands up, stop the coffin from coming down and yell out more instructions to you.” And that Brooke just wants to keep him on his toes. She just doesn’t want him to be too sure, is that it? She says no, she wants him to be sure that she loves him. She just doesn’t want to have to do everything HIS way. He laughs – his way? Oh. my God, the curveballs she throws at him on things he thinks are settled. She tells him, they discuss things and then she goes off and does whatever they want. She points out that Ridge and Stephanie don’t run her life. She doesn’t understand why they have to come up with all these agreements about what she can and can not do. She can be respectful of him and still have a different opinion. Isn’t that enough?
They are interrupted by the Justice of the Peace who tells them that he thought he should tell them that he has to leave. After a slight hesitation, Nick tells him he might not want to leave just yet. Brooke smiles smugly. They follow the JOP up the hill to the pavilion. Brooke asks Nick if he is sure he wants to do this? He says not really, but tells the JOP to go ahead. He starts and Nick interrupts and asks him if they can just skip ahead to the meat and potatoes? When the JOP doesn’t, Nick, asks if there is a problem? Brooke says she doesn’t know. But, they really haven’t resolved anything. He replies that he loves her. And he’s not going to let her go. “And if we’re still having this argument when we’re old and helping each other glue our teeth in, well so be it!” So she asks, they are going to argue til death do them part? He replies no, she is going to be herself and he’s going to be himself and mostly they are going to get along. “You are IT for me, that’s all I know. That’s all I need to know. You got anything you want to add to that?” Surprised, she adds no. He asks the JOP to continue.
The Justice of the Peace conducts the ceremony with each saying their own vows. Brooke says she loves Nick and she never imagined loving anyone this way. And she never imagined anyone loving her the way he does. It’s kind of scary as he sees her so clearly and takes her so seriously like no one else has. He understands her sense of humor and she wants him to be happy. She wants to make him really happy. And she knows he’s going to be a great dad to her kids. “So, yeah, you’re IT for me too, Buster. Nothing in this world could make me happier than marrying you right now.” When it’s his turn, Nick states that did she know he fell in love with her the first day he met her? He always thinks he has all the answers, but she challenges him. She makes him wiser, freer, more giving and forgiving. No day is the same with her, and he likes that. “I’ve been looking for you my whole life. And I’m never gonna let you go.” They exchange rings with Brooke saying the band has to go on first, next to her heart.
The JOP pronounces them husband and wife. Nick scoops her up. She squeals and he says they did it! Amid a billowing white, they kiss.
Bridget walks up on Jackie and asks where is her mom and Nick? They aren’t on The Marlin. From her vantage point, Jackie points to the pavilion and tells Bridget to look. Then she slips off and calls Stephanie who is telling Ridge that there is nobody for Brooke but him. Jackie takes great pleasure in telling her that “Brooke and my son are married….what’s the matter, Stephanie? Cat got your tongue?"
Shocked, Stephanie slowly puts the phone away and turns reverently toward Ridge and tells him something seems to have happened. Yet, she knows it’s only a matter of time…..”Honey, you’ll get her back….she’ll never be happy with him……he can’t make her happy.”
Determinedly, Ridge takes off his wedding ring and holds it before him. Stephanie comes around behind and lays her head against his head/shoulders.
Bridget walks the length of the pavilion and watches Nick and Brooke return to The Marlin. Brooke takes off her shoes as Nick escorts her aboard and they slip out to sea, kissing and starting their new life to the strains of “Going Back Again”. Bridget spies the lonely bridal bouquet and picks it up and looks at it wistfully.
