[Crowd murmuring]

Marlena: Get out.

Stefano: I've come to pay my respects.

Marlena: Get out.

Stefano: Marlena, you don't think for one moment --

Marlena: I don't think. I know. You've been after John ever since he turned on you.

Stefano: I assure you --

Marlena: It kills you, doesn't it, that your pawn, your greatest creation turned to his enemies?

Stefano: The only thing that ever bothered me was that he was with the woman I loved.

Marlena: That's not love. That is sick obsession. And it made you want to hurt him even more, didn't it? Well, you may have destroyed his body, but you can't touch his spirit. And you can never change the way that I feel about him because that is forever. And you -- I will despise you until the day I die.

Stefano: Despite what you think, I admired John. He was a worthy adversary.

Marlena: Get out!

Bo: Get out before we throw you out.

Roman: You heard him.

Stefano: Fine. I'll leave you to your grieving and pray that you and your family do not have any more funerals. [Crowd murmuring]

Kate: Let it go -- the threats, the hatred, the killing. Sami's so terrified of another hit on her family that she agreed to the annulment. She got Lucas to sign. She's yours for the taking.

E.J.: Not necessarily. Actually, I might need your help.

Kate: I don't think I've made myself clear about this.

E.J.: Evidently, neither have I. Look, this vendetta doesn't end until Samantha and I are married. Oh, come on, Kate. We both want exactly the same thing.

Kate: No. No, see, we don't want the same thing. You want Sami. I want the vendetta to end for my son's sake and for my grandchildren's sake.

E.J.: Sure. Absolutely. And I'm doing my best.

Kate: [Sighs] God.

E.J.: Look... I'm sorry about John. I know how close you two were.

Kate: Yes, we were. He was a hero, E.J.

E.J.: Look, I, um -- I got to head off.

Kate: E.J... if Sami marries you to end the vendetta, she'll be a hero.

Kate: Well, that was very embarrassing.

John: I don't care. I don't care if the whole world knows how happy you've made me. So, here's to you and me, kid. To a new beginning for us.

Kate: To us.

John: To us.

Kate: Goodbye, my love.

Marlena: John? [Sobbing]

Bo: Hey.

Hope: Hey.

Bo: Got some numbers and letters on this one piece. I just have to find the matching fragment.

Hope: Your eyes must be exhausted. You've been at this all night. Why don't you take a break? I brought you some food.

Bo: No, Stefano showing up at the church convinced me we got no time to waste. We got to nail him for John's murder.

Hope: You will. You have to. We can't lose anyone else we love.

Max: How you holding up?

Stephanie: I'm okay, I guess. [Sighs] I'll never forget the look on Marlena's face when they lowered John's coffin into the ground. It was like her whole world had just ended.

Max: Yeah. Well, she and John had one of the all-time great loves.

Stephanie: Like my mom and dad.

Max: Mm-hmm.

Stephanie: How do you say goodbye to someone like that?

Max: Well, at least Marlena has Belle and Sami to get her through it, you know? When Kay buried Steve -- or what she thought was Steve -- you were just a baby, weren't you?

Stephanie: I was too young to even have a clue of what was going on. I couldn't be there for her. And I never have been.

Chelsea: I've just been so caught up in my own life, I just didn't realize how serious this whole thing with the DiMera’s was.

Billie: Chelsea, just promise me you'll be careful, okay?

Chelsea: Look, I know that I'm a Brady, but do you really think they're gonna come after me?

Billie: Actually, uh, to be honest, I'm a little more worried about the rapist that's on campus. Just stay on your guard, okay?

Chelsea: Mom, I'm gonna be fine, okay? Nothing's gonna happen to me.

Billie: It better not, 'cause you're all I've got, okay?

Lucas: Here.

Sami: [Sniffling]

Lucas: I guess it all kind of hit me, too. Sitting in that church, I can't believe it happened. I can't believe that really dead.

Sami: Yeah.

Lucas: And it could happen again. Stefano made that clear today. And I can't deny it anymore.

Sami: What are you saying?

Lucas: I'm saying you're right. I guess you have to marry E.J.

Sami: Belle, your mom wanted to be alone, but I made her promise that she would call if she needed anything. Okay.

Tony: You know, Stefano's right. He was my brother. I never even knew him.

Anna: Tony, it wasn't your fault. There was nothing you could have done.

Tony: You know, there is something I can do right now. Come here. Hi.

Lexie: Hi.

Tony: I know the two of you met at Stefano's practice funeral, but I don't think you met formally. Alexandra, I'd like you to meet Anna. Anna, this is my sister.

Lexie: Well, it's nice to meet you, although Tony and I aren't really related.

Tony: Oh, I beg to differ. We both survived Stefano as our father. If that hasn't bonded us for a lifetime, I don't know what will.

Lexie: Yeah, you've got a point there, huh?

Anna: It's very nice to formally meet you, too, Alexandra.

Tony: Why don't you and Abe come over for dinner one night next week?

Lexie: Well, um, yeah, I'd like that very much.

Stephanie: I noticed you haven't eaten anything all day. That's not good. Moms need taken care of, too, you know.

Kayla: Thank you.

Stephanie: Oh, I almost forgot. I wrote down the number to the sorority house and my class schedule in case you guys ever want to get together or something. Of course, there's always my cell.

Steve: In case?

Stephanie: I mean when. We could get dinner or something. Nothing big.

Steve: Yeah, nothing big at all.

Abe: Well, that is definitely a four.

Bo: All righty. That gives us 27rl4. Not much to go on, but maybe the computer will give us something.

Abe: Yeah, I hope so. Could be our only shot at finding out who killed John.

Sami: You know this isn't what I want.

Lucas: Yeah, I know.

Sami: Thank you. Thank you for understanding, Lucas.

Lucas: I just love you so much.

Sami: [Sobs] I love you, too.

Lucas: I'm never gonna stop. You know that, right?

Sami: Just hold me, Lucas. Let's just stay here.

Shawn: I'd like to propose a toast. To my boy Johnny, a Brady if there ever was one. He was a man without a past, who never stopped fighting to protect our future.

Stefano: I am branding you with the Phoenix, John. Now you will be branded for life. And you will always do what you are told -- always -- because you are nothing but my pawn.

John: [Thinking] John Black.

John: Oh, Marlena.

Marlena: John, oh. I'm sorry. Obviously I've caught you at a very bad time.

Marlena: Oh, John, what beautiful, beautiful charms.

John: No, not just charms. Those are good-luck charms for your second chance at life.

Shawn: To our friend... ...our son... our brother...

Hope: We have so much catching up to do and all of the time in the world to do it. I'll tell you what -- when you're feeling up to it, we're gonna have a huge, huge party at the pub. Oh, my God, John, it's so good to have you back.

Sami: John.

Marlena: We're home.

Sami: John, mom told me that you were out of the coma, but I can't believe you're here. You're back.

John: Yeah, I'M...back.

Sami: John, I missed you so much.

Julie: Well, the heart wants what it wants, and we're all proof of that.

Shawn: ...And beloved John Black.

Julie: To John.

Bo: Hear, hear. [Rain falling] Would I be standing here after all these years among the stars above? Maybe not if it wasn't for your love smiling faces all around like when the king has just been crowned a battle has been won that I'd have lost if it wasn't for your love a fairy tale unfolds more true than stories I've been told at last my chance to shine and all in perfect time a life I once dreamed of who'd have thought if it wasn't for your love

John: As this ring... encircles your finger... never forget that your love encircles my heart. And, oh, the wonderful surprise to have a light so bright it blinds it blinds my eyes but finally I see how it feels to live a dream but would I have touched the sky ever flown so high? Ooh, not I, if it wasn't for your love your love

Steve: Hey. What's going on? Pocket man sick again?

Kayla: Yeah.

Steve: What the hell is going on, huh? How long's he been here?

Kayla: His foster parents brought him in to the ER last night. They told the attending that he was having trouble breathing.

Steve: Was he throwing up again? Did have -- what was that -- poor muscle tone?

Kayla: Yeah, yeah. All the same symptoms, just like before.

Steve: How's he doing now?

Kayla: Dr. Davidoff has been with him most of the night. She said his symptoms have eased off and they're hydrating him.

Steve: But he's okay?

Kayla: Stable.

Steve: What the hell is going on? Mrs. Meyers takes him away from us, puts him with those new foster parents --

Kayla: I'm sure they're perfectly fine.

Steve: No, no. That's not the point. He got sick again, which means that she can't blame us for poisoning him. You know what's gonna happen? We can get him back now, baby.

Kayla: I just want to know that he's okay.

Steve: Yeah, and what's making him sick.

Philip: Where's my son?

Kayla: He's in there. Dr. Davidoff and the neonatal team have been there pretty much the whole night.

Philip: How can this happen again?

Steve: Well, that's what we'd like to know.

Philip: This is crazy. While I'm being bounced back and forth doing things the right way, going through the proper channels, someone's trying to poison my son.

Steve: At least now you know it wasn't us because he wasn't with us this time.

Philip: I've got to talk to a doctor.

Steve: Hang on a second. Hang on. Listen, I don't care about me, but don't you think you owe my wife an apology?

Philip: Get out of my way.

Kayla: No, no, no, no. Come on, come on, come on. Really, all I care about is that Pocket is all right.

Philip: Tyler. His name is Tyler.

Steve: Don't yell at her. Now, just tell her you're sorry.

Philip: My son has been poisoned three times and you're worried about your wife's hurt feelings? Get out of my face.

Kayla: Steve!

Steve: Come here.

Bo: Thought you were gonna kick my butt, didn't you?

Shawn D.: I let you win.

Bo: Yeah, right. Wait till you get in the academy and Commander Flynn gets ahold of you. He'll make you regret you ever joined up.

Shawn D.: You mean old iron pants?

Bo: Do not -- do not ever say that out loud. If he catches you --

Shawn D.: Okay. Noted.

Bo: This was a good idea.

Shawn D.: Yeah.

Bo: I needed a break, a chance to get out, clear my head.

Shawn D.: You got any leads in John's hit-and-run?

Bo: We're working on something. I think it'll pan out.

Shawn D.: I can't believe that mom let you out of the house. She's been pretty freaked out after what happened to him.

Bo: We all are.

Shawn D.: Belle's on edge, too. She pulled this whole number on me about joining the academy. I know it has something to do with her dad.

Bo: Yeah.

Shawn D.: She said she wished I never joined.

Bo: Belle and your mom are on the same page.

Shawn D.: My mom changed her mind about me joining the academy?

Bo: She's never been hot on the idea. You know that.

Shawn D.: Dad, she's a cop herself.

Bo: She's your mom, first, last, and always.

Shawn D.: And I'm an adult.

Bo: When Claire's an adult, you let me know if you stop worrying about her, okay?

Shawn D.: I get mom's concern, okay?

Bo: Stop. We just lost one of our closest and dearest friends.

Shawn D.: John wasn't a cop. Besides, his murder might have been an accident.

Bo: Is your gut telling you it was an accident?

Shawn D.: No, it's not.

Bo: Yeah, there you go. It wasn’t. He was murdered. I have no idea how Marlena's gonna wake up and face this day alone.

Shawn D.: She's not alone. She's got Belle.

Bo: Oh, good. They need each other right now.

Shawn D.: And Mom needs to remember -- being a cop, it is a risk. But it's not a death sentence.

Bo: Hey. John died exactly the same way as your little brother. Your mom -- she's tough as steel. But losing another son -- that she could not handle.

Belle: Is it okay if I come in? I don't suppose you're hungry. I stopped by that French bakery you like.

Marlena: Pain au chocolat – that was your father's favorite thing. He would go in there, and he would pretend only to speak French to that little funny girl behind the counter.

Belle: Dad spoke French?

Marlena: No. He just pretended...only to speak French, and I would pretend that I didn't know him.

Belle: Open or closed?

Marlena: Oh, I don't know if I can bear to bring in a whole new day. Up to you, sweetie. Up to you.

Belle: Did you sleep last night?

Marlena: Did you sleep last night?

Belle: Why didn't you take something?

Marlena: Drug myself into a dreamless sleep just so that I could wake up... reach out... remember that he wasn't there. I was able to do that all night long without ever closing my eyes.

Belle: It'll get better. Yes, you will get past this.

Marlena: But first we have to go through this. The anger, the loss, the grief, the -- the acceptance.

Belle: Does it always work that way?

Marlena: You mean is there a process of surviving the loss of someone that you love? I've counseled hundreds of patients that have lost someone. I've talked to them, held them, held their hands, listened to their words. Even on occasion, I would offer them a glass of water. And they would look at me as if I were mad. I must have been mad.

Belle: What do you mean?

Marlena: I mean that no psychiatrist can ever mend a shattered heart. I mean, we can -- we can offer antidepressants or sage words. "It'll get better. You'll survive this. You'll get through it." I don't know how I ever could have been so insanely naive.

Belle: You're being too hard on yourself. Mom, no one can mend a shattered heart, but you helped them with their grief.

Marlena: I don't even know anymore. I'm not sure -- I have been through loss. I have been through terrible, terrible loss. And somehow the loss of your daddy is just excruciatingly, unspeakably painful.

Belle: I know.

Marlena: I had no idea what they were going through at all. I had no idea the depths of their despair. I sat in my doctor's chair, and I would give out prescriptions. I would say, "just take it -- take it one day at a time." I didn't know. I got to go home to my husband. I had no idea. I had no idea what it was like for them. They'd have to... walk empty house. Quiet and no sound. Not breath, not heartbeats. And they would -- they would look at A...favorite broken and old chair... the smell of a pipe... maybe even a half-done crossword puzzle... and the handwriting they would never, ever see again. How could I ever say to them, "You'll get through it"? How could I even say those words?

Belle: It's true. What else can we do?

Marlena: I don't know. How could words do anything to help at all? They can't even scratch the surface of a grief that goes right to their core. I just must have sounded like some hideous, horrible, senseless greeting card. How could I ever tell somebody in that kind of pain that they could keep going on?

Belle: Mom...don't, okay? Your life isn't over, okay? You can't give up.

Marlena: I don't know what else to do. I feel like I can't go on.

Belle: Stop. You're scaring me. You're always the strong one.

Marlena: I'm not strong, baby. I'm not strong now. I don't think I can be strong -- not without your daddy.

Belle: We'll get through this, okay? We'll help each other stay strong.

Marlena: Darling, you're mourning, too. You lost your daddy. Claire lost her grandpa.

Belle: Well, we'll miss him together. And we'll give each other strength.

Marlena: You're amazing. You're such a blessing to me. And your daddy would be so proud of you.

Belle: We'll always be a family, Mom, okay? He'll live forever in our memories.

Marlena: I've got such wonderful, wonderful, wonderful memories of being with your dad. I adored every moment of it. I'm not sure that I can live on those memories. I'm not sure that I can live not waking up to him and seeing his face, hearing his voice, smelling his skin, having him call me doc. I'm not sure I can do any of that.

Sami: Mom, is there room for -- room for one more?

Belle: I'm guessing you got French pastries.

Sami: Well, yeah. I thought that would be the perfect thing to tempt mom into -- oh. You, uh, beat me to it, huh, Belle?

Belle: Great minds, you know?

Sami: Mom...

Marlena: Come here. Come here, sweetie. Come here, all three of you.

Sami: Mommy. What can I do?

Marlena: Oh, my goodness. You're doing it right now. You're doing it.

Sami: I spoke to Eric on the way here.

Marlena: I spoke to him last night.

Sami: He hates the fact that he is not here with you.

Marlena: I know. We're doing the best we can. He just can’t.

Sami: And Brady and Carrie -- they're so worried about you, too.

Belle: All of us are, Mom.

Marlena: Look, I appreciate that. Thank you. But you know what? I'm gonna manage.

Sami: I know you will. But you know what? I want to help.

Belle: Yeah, we both do, any way we can.

Sami: Yeah. Belle and I -- we're gonna take care of you.

Belle: Yeah. Both of us.

Marlena: Gosh. That's mighty sweet. I don't need taken care of.

Sami: I think you do. I think I have to move in here with you.

Belle: Yeah, that's a good idea. I will, too. And, no, we're not taking no for an answer.

Sami: Belle and I are gonna stay for as long as you need -- days, weeks, months, even.

Belle: Until you're ready to face the world again.

Marlena: You are so sweet. You're so sweet. That is completely out of the question.

Bo: If something ever happened to you, I couldn't take it.

Marlena: He's Stefano's son. Do you think that you can control that?

Sami: I have to.

Marlena: You're taking on something incredibly dangerous, and it could end with your life.

Philip: I love you, Belle.

Belle: Philip.
