Marlena: [Gasps]

John: Oh, God. Doc. It's you. Oh, my God. It's you. Oh, my -- oh, my God. Oh, my God.

Marlena: John?

Stefano: [Sighs] Oh, Tony.

Tony: You know, I bought this for a dinner I was supposed to have with John and Marlena, but I think you'd have better use for it now. Celebrating my brother's murder.

Stefano: [Sighs]

Hope: Oh, my gosh. Who did all this?

Julie: Kay, how are your folks holding up?

Kayla: I think my mom's all right. She's losing herself in her work. It's just Pop. I'm worried about him.

Doug: Kayla, you're not the only one.

Steve: Should have killed Stefano when I had the chance.

Kayla: Steve.

Steve: If I'd have done it when I had the chance, none of us would be here right now.

Kayla: And neither would you.

Belle: Where's mom? Why hasn't she called?

Sami: Don't worry, Belle. She's gonna be fine. My dad and Maggie are gonna find her.

Belle: Nobody's seen her since she left the hospital last night.

Shawn D.: She probably just needed some time to herself.

Belle: What if we don't find her in time for the funeral?

Sami: She's gonna come to the funeral. She wouldn't miss it. [Cellphone rings]

Belle: It's Brady. Brady, hey, where are you?

Shawn D.: Let's just hope that he gets a flight. Belle really needs her family around her right now. And your mom not being here is just making things worse.

Sami: I got to tell you, Shawn, I'm really worried about her. She's usually the strong one, you know? I don't know how she's gonna handle this.

Marlena: Answer me. Are you there? Is that you?

Roman: Doc, we've been looking all over.

Marlena: Oh. I'm sorry. I was thinking that you -- never mind.

Roman: You okay? The funeral's set to start pretty soon.

Marlena: I can't do that. I can't -- I can't -- I can't say goodbye to him.

Stefano: Please, go away, eh? I don't have time for your insane accusations. I have my own problems.

Tony: John is your problem -- your only problem.

Stefano: God. How little you know of my life.

Tony: What, you think you finished something last night, that you had the last word? You stirred up a hornet's nest. And when john is buried and all the tears are spent, the Brady’s will come after you with everything they've got.

Stefano: You know, it just warms my heart to see your concern. It's really nice to know you care, Tony.

Tony: [Chuckles] I don't care. As far as I'm concerned, you're already dead.

Stefano: [Sighs]

Marlena: What made you think to look for me out here?

Roman: John told me about the night you came back to Salem, how you appeared on the dock like this beautiful vision. He said it was like a miracle.

Marlena: That was a long time ago.

Roman: Yeah. Yeah, but still... I don't know. I just...had this feeling that you would come back here and look for that same kind of miracle.

Marlena: I keep waiting for him to reach out for me the way that he did when he was in the coma.

Roman: Yeah, of course you would.

Marlena: There's just so much pain. So much suffering. That one man, that... DiMera.

Roman: You ready to go, Doc? Your family needs you.

Marlena: Roman, what if I'm not ready? What if I can't do that? I was here all night 'cause I couldn't bear to go home.

Roman: Doc, I know you. I know you can do this. You've got a lot of strength inside you. Yes, you do. And besides that, you got Belle's strength, you got my strength. You got every one of the Brady’s. We are gonna be with you every step of the way. We're gonna be with you every step of the way.

Hope: Wow. This is incredible. It's perfect.

Bo: Yeah. I'd like to know who did this.

Hope: You and me both.

Fr. Kelly: I can answer that.

Hope: Father Kelly, good morning.

Fr. Kelly: Good morning. Bo, Hope, I'm very sorry for your loss. I consider John a friend myself.

Bo: Thank you, Father.

Hope: Thank you, Father. Father, you were saying, the flowers, the photographs, who are they from?

Fr. Kelly: It all arrived very early this morning along with a check to cover the entire funeral.

Bo: Courtesy of whom?

Fr. Kelly: Ms. V. Alamain?

Bo: Vivian.

Hope: That's John's aunt.

Bo: Is she here?

Fr. Kelly: No. She said something about not being welcome back in Salem. But she wanted to make sure that John had a proper farewell.

Hope: She definitely did that.

Bo: Yeah.

Fr. Kelly: Excuse me for a minute. I need to see about the programs.

Hope: Of course. Father, thank you.

Fr. Kelly: Please let me know if you need anything else.

Bo: All right, thanks.

Hope: Wow. Vivian Alamain. I'd almost forgotten her.

Bo: Yeah.

Hope: It's been a while since I've heard that name.

Bo: She obviously did not forget about John.

Hope: How could she? How could anyone?

Kayla: I'm sorry I snapped at you.

Steve: Oh, no, it's all right, sweetness. I think we're all on edge, aren't we?

Julie: Is it any wonder? First Benjy dead, now John.

Doug: Yeah, this whole vendetta thing has always been crazy, but now it's –

Steve: Now it's way out of control. But that's a conversation for another day.

Kayla: Thank you.

Steve: You know what's really weird? I'm the one who brought John Black to Salem in the first place.

Steve: Listen, man, you can trust me. I'm gonna take good care of you. Don't you know that? Huh?

Steve: Yeah, back then he was just a paycheck. I never figured he'd end up being one of my best friends.

Stephanie: I'm so sorry, commissioner. I know how close you were with John.

Abe: Very.

Lexie: John was family.

Celeste: I wish I felt he were at peace, enjoying God's eternal rewards.

Stephanie: You don't?

Celeste: I'm afraid he'll be a very restless soul.

Jett: So, where's Nick?

Chelsea: Um, he's at home with the kids. He didn't really know John that well.

Jett: Oh. Well, me neither, except for his reputation with the ISA. But I wanted to come, you know.

Chelsea: I'm glad you did.

Belle: So, Brady and Chloe can't make it. Apparently Innsbruck got two meters of snow, and they can't get a flight out.

Shawn D.: I'm sorry, honey.

Sami: Oh, well, Eric can't come either, so I know how you feel. But you have your big sister. You can always lean on my shoulder.

Belle: I know. It's just my dad would have wanted us all together.

Sami: You will be together in your hearts, and that is what matters most, right? Come here.

E.J.: Lucas, can I offer you a hand with those?

Lucas: What the hell are you doing here?

E.J.: I just came to offer my condolences.

Lucas: Condolences? Come on, man. Get up! Get up, you son of a -- you killed John! You killed Sami's stepfather.

Kate: Lucas! Lucas, what the hell are you doing?

Lucas: Taking out the garbage. What does it look like I'm doing? Get up, man!

Steve: Hey!

Lucas: You've got five seconds to get out of here.

Sami: E.J., what are you doing here?

Lucas: That's what I want to know.

E.J.: I just came to offer my condolences, say I'm sorry. I wish things had been different.

Lucas: What the hell's that supposed to mean, huh?

Sami: I know exactly what it means. You know what, E.J.? This day is not about me or you or Lucas or any of us. This day is for John. Show him some respect.

Kate: She's right, Lucas. It's not the time or the place.

Lucas: Mom, please. Spare me the lecture.

Doug: You got a lot of nerve coming here, man.

Steve: Turn around and walk away. Go on.

Abe: And don't even think about pressing charges.

E.J.: I came to give a message. I've done that. So you can all stop groaning, eh?

Stefano: What a heartwarming sentiment, Tony. [Chuckles] Who knows? Perhaps you'll soon get your wish.

Tony: Not soon enough. Not for my brother.

Stefano: For God's sake, why do you keep calling him that? You hardly knew the man.

Tony: You banished me on an island for the last 20 years. It was rather difficult. I didn't even know my own sister.

Stefano: Well, I suggest that you make an effort, all right, because you and Alexandra will get on famously because you both disgrace the DiMera name. Now, please, get out of my sight, will you? Just get the hell out of here.

Anna: Tony? Are you coming? We don't want to be late.

Tony: Yes, darling. No, I'm quite finished.

Anna: And to think I was foolish enough to pity you. You're getting everything you deserve.

Lucas: I'm sorry I lost it like that. When I saw his face, I couldn't control myself, you know? He's the reason why John is dead.

Sami: I understand, Lucas. But there is only one way to end the violence, and we both know what that is.

Belle: Thank you for bringing me and Claire also.

Shawn D.: Yeah, of course. Are you okay?

Belle: Yeah. I just need some time alone with him.

Shawn D.: Do you want me to leave you?

Belle: No. No. Please. I need you. I thought I said goodbye to you at the hospital last night. And then I thought, at the funeral home, "okay, I can do it." But I can’t. I just can't bear this, Daddy. We need you. How can you just be here one day and then just be gone? I love you. And I will always love you. And I know that you're always gonna be with me in spirit. But I just want you to hold me right now. [Sobbing]

Hope: Belle. Is there anything I can do for you?

Belle: No. I'm okay.

Hope: Okay. It's okay.

Belle: It's just hard.

Hope: Of course it is.

[Melancholy organ music playing]

Fr. Kelly: We meet in the name of Jesus Christ, who died and was raised to the glory of God the father. Grace and mercy be with you.

All: And also with you.

Fr. Kelly: We have come here today to remember before god our brother John, to give thanks for his life, to commend him to God, our merciful redeemer and judge, to commit his body to be buried, and to comfort one another in our grief. In the waters of baptism, John Black died with Jesus Christ and rose with him to new life. May he now share with him eternal glory.

[Door opens]

Victor: No, I wasn't invited. And I'm sure I'm not welcome. But I had to come because there's some things that I need to say.

Victor: John was not only my former son-in-law. He was a close friend -- that is until our recent parting for which I take full responsibility. I freely admit that I could have handled the whole situation with Claire differently. I'm sure John would have because he was a man of selfless confidence and generosity, which I, with all my money, could never hope to match. He was a man of honor and, most of all, conviction. He knew who he was, and he never wavered from what was right and what was wrong, made all the more remarkable by the fact that most of his life, he had no idea who he was or where he came from. Even his very name he took from a sign at the midnight mission. This man with no name taught us what one human being with a belief in truth and justice could do if he was willing to back up that truth and justice with action and courage. I will miss him. Forgive the interruption. I only wish I could make things right.

Marlena: Thank you.

Shawn: Thank you.

Stefano: I need the limo. I don't care. Just get it here.

Caroline: John was, to Shawn and me, another son. In fact, for a while, we mistakenly believed that he was our son. Why wouldn't we? He just fit in as if he'd been with the Brady’s all along. Although we didn't raise him from birth, we could not have loved him more if we had. So we consider him an honorary Brady. And he was a man of honor that would bring that to any name. We will miss you, son.

Hope: I think John was everybody's hero. I know he came between myself and...disaster more times than I can remember. John always made me -- he always made me laugh. I'm sorry. I can't do this. I'm sorry. I wanted to come here today and be a pillar of strength for both of you because I love you both so much. This never should have happened. Damn it. He should be alive. He should be standing here next to us. He should be holding his beautiful granddaughter. John always... he always told me to hang in there and to be strong and to never give in to the darkness... no matter... how dim the light got. You gave me strength. I'm sorry, John. I can't be strong, not today, not when I've lost my brother. [Sobbing]

Anna: I spoke to Carrie last night for hours on the phone. It broke her heart that she couldn't be here today 'cause she loved John like another father. Well, I mean, he was her father for all the time when Roman was gone and I was off seeking fame and fortune. Now, um... older and somewhat wiser, I was wishing that I had been there to share in some of those memories she talked about. The, uh, games and road trips and Friday-night pizza. The truth is that John... John raised a better daughter than I ever could have. And for that, I'll always be grateful. Thank you, my friend, for taking care of my little girl.

Abe: I've known John Black for many years. I've seen his courage, his determination, and his great love for his family, and his commitment to do the right thing, whatever the cost. And I am so proud to have called him my friend. As Shakespeare said, "I shall not look upon his like again." John was never officially a police officer. But in recognition of his time as captain of the Salem P.D. and his tireless efforts to fight the good fight... I am so proud... I am so proud to say that he will be buried with full policeman's honors. Farewell... my partner.

E.J.: So, what are you doing here, Kate, hmm? Shouldn't you be at the church with the rest of them?

Kate: What about you? I thought for sure you'd be there, gloating over your victory.

E.J.: My victory, huh?

Kate: Yes. We both know perfectly well this is exactly what you wanted -- John dead. That's why you put a bullet in his chest last year.

Belle: Claire made this for you the other day. She couldn't wait to give it to you. I promise you, Dad, that I'm gonna tell Claire all about you, and I'm gonna teach her everything you taught me. And she'll be as proud of you as I am. [Sobbing]

Sami: Belle should have had a lifetime before having to face this day. And if you had told me that I was going to be eulogizing John Black, I would have said that you were crazy... mostly because I thought he was invincible. But also... we didn't get along that well for a long time. And, um, looking back, it seems strange, but I didn't think he would forgive me. But John, being John, of course he did. Because he was a caring, loving, forgiving man. He was a good friend, a devoted husband, and he was a heroic father. And I can only begin to tell you how lucky I am to have had two wonderful fathers. Thank you, John. Thank you for always being there for me and for my sister and especially... for my mom. But now I am gonna be there for you. Your death will count for something. I promise. won't have problems - think again.

Roman: All these beautiful and wonderful words we have heard here today I think shows what a very special man John Black was. But I'm sure that nobody here had the strange kind of relationship with John that I did. We shared a name. We shared a family. We shared a life. For those of you who don't know the story, due to a very bizarre set of circumstances, I came back to Salem years ago to find that there was a new Roman Brady in town, one who unwittingly and innocently had taken my place in every way -- father, son, husband, you name it. That was John Black. And as you can imagine, I was more than a little upset. And you know how I can be when I get upset, especially since by that time, he seemed to be more me than I was. And that's hard to deal with, believe me. That is hard to deal with. But then John -- John did something pretty incredible. John came to me, and he said that he would step aside. And he did. I don't know about you folks, but...I call that class. John, if anybody was ever gonna have my name, I am honored that it was you.

E.J.: But I didn't shoot John Black, did I?

Kate: Who did?

E.J.: I have no idea. It was probably Andre. It could have been Bart.

Kate: Hmm. Well, that's good. It's always good to blame the dead guys.

E.J.: What's your point exactly?

Kate: My point is... you were taught to hate the Brady’s by someone that you idolized before you even knew them, before you even met them. And then you did meet them. And you actually -- you actually fell in love with one of them. And I'm sure it's occurred to you by now that they didn't deserve this vendetta any more than John deserved to die. And if that hasn't occurred to you, then you're a complete idiot. Take it from someone who knows -- you can be so blinded by hatred that you don't even see what's right in front of you. And by the time you do, it's too late.

Marlena: Thank you for coming today. Thank you for the wonderful things that you've said about john. He touched so many people. He affected so many lives. Here I am, my love. I'm having a hard time finding the words to say what you meant to me. You knew. You always knew. You were my life. You were my everything, my friend, my confidant, my lover, my champion. And were there such a thing, you were my knight in shining armor. When I think of all the dragons you slayed for me... I don't know if I'm ever going to feel safe again without you. I'm not sure anybody will. [Door opens]

Stefano: I've come to pay my respects.

Marlena: Get out!

Philip: My son has been poisoned and you're worried about your wife's hurt feelings? Get out of my face.

Kayla: Steve!

Sami: What are you saying?

Lucas: I'm saying you're right. I guess you have to marry E.J.
