Hope: Oh! Shawn, are you all right?
Shawn D.: Great, Mom. Having the time of my life.
Hope: Sounds like things didn't work out so well in Tulsa.
Shawn D.: Yeah. You want to know why they didn't? Two words -- Philip Kiriakis.
Philip: Hey, look who's here. You see that big smile on mommy's face? Don't tell me you heard the good news already.
Belle: Oh, well, I think just seeing the two of you so happy is a reason for me to smile.
E.J.: I don't know how you did it, but I'm sure, as sure as I'm standing here, that you and the rest of the Salem Police Department faked my father's death.
Roman: Why would we do that, E.J.?
E.J.: I'm not sure. Not yet.
E.J.: Officer -- E.J. Wells. I was wondering, would you be kind enough to ask Mrs. Roberts if can just have a brief word with her?
Officer: I'll check.
E.J.: Thank you. [Knock on door]
Officer: There's an E.J. Wells here. He'd like to speak with you.
Sami: Um, o-okay. Thanks.
E.J.: Thank you, officer.
Sami: E.J., what are you -- what are you doing here? You should be at your dad's funeral.
E.J.: Why? He's not dead.
Sami: What are you talking about? Of course he's dead.
E.J.: It's funny. My sources say otherwise.
Sami: What sources?
E.J.: Let's just say that the Salem Police Department isn't exactly true blue, eh?
Sami: There's someone working for the DiMeras in the Salem P.D.? That's how André found out? Oh, my God. I have to call my da--
E.J.: So it is true. He is alive. Where is he, Samantha? What have they done to him?
Bo: Well, so far, so good.
Roman: Yeah. Too bad that's not the truth.
Bo: Yeah. Where's the old man now?
Roman: Funeral parlor. Open box, quick service, then we watch Stefano's mortal remains driven out to the graveyard.
Bo: Can we bury him alive just for a little while -- 30, 40 years?
Roman: What a sweet thought that is.
Bo: Well, if things go our way...André takes the bait, makes his move at the funeral home or at the burial.
Roman: When he does, we nail him.
Kate: Now I feel so foolish that I asked you to escort me here.
Bob: A little more time with the beautiful Kate Roberts -- who's complaining?
Kate: Yeah, like you didn't have plenty of other things to do. I just feel like such a wreck. I feel like a wreck.
Bob: Listen, Kate, what you need to do is take one of my yoga classes. You need to meditate, relax, and clear your mind.
Kate: Relax when I'm fighting for my life?
Belle: So, Lauren's willing to talk? That's great.
Philip: April Hudson, the woman in charge of the shelter, said she'd set up a meeting. Only this time, I won't make the same mistakes -- shared custody, whatever it takes.
Belle: I'm really proud of you.
Philip: No more running away, no more lashing out. I'm gonna face my problems... and be grateful for all the blessings that I have.
Hope: Wait a minute. Philip and Belle are sharing a hotel room in Tulsa?
Shawn D.: Oh, yeah. And get this -- it's the bridal suite, with a great big bed and a big old couch. But don't worry, I took your advice and I kept my cool. I told her about my decision to join the academy and guess who lost it -- she told me I was making decisions without her again.
Hope: And then you lost it, correct?
Shawn D.: Come on, Mom. Can you blame me? The snap of a finger, she takes off with her ex-husband, and then she turns around and tries to lecture me? Can you believe that?
Hope: What I believe, honey, is that...you may have a little attitude of your own.
Kate: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pull you into this. It's not your problem.
Bob: This must be serious, because the Kate I know isn't afraid of anything.
Kate: There's someone after me, someone really dangerous.
Bob: This is what we're gonna do -- you're gonna fly back to L.A. with me and take a refresher course in self-defense.
Kate: Oh, God, would I love to do that.
Bob: It's been a while. You've got to keep your skills sharp.
Kate: Thanks for the offer, but I can't go. I can't go because of Lucas, because of Mythic, but thank you again for agreeing to do that show. That could be the thing that gets us out of the hole.
Bob: I'll do anything for you. You know that.
Kate: I know. Thank you.
Bob: I got to go or I'll miss my flight, but I promise to be in touch with you as soon as I finish taping "the biggest loser." Stay safe.
Kate: I'll try.
Roman: Kate. I thought I saw you out here. Thought I told you to stay at the house.
Kate: I didn't feel safe at the house, okay? Sorry for making your life more complicated than it already is.
Roman: Well, you know what? Actually, you're making it easier for a change, because keeping you closer is the only way I can be sure to keep you out of trouble. Come on inside.
Sami: You tricked me. You son of a --
E.J.: I tricked you? Other way around, I think, sweetheart.
Sami: Get out.
E.J.: I don't care what you think about him. He's my father.
Sami: Get out, E.J.
E.J.: As you wish.
E.J.: Make up your mind -- stay or go?
Sami: You have to keep quiet about this.
E.J.: Tell me if he's okay and where I can find him.
Sami: I don't know, okay? I don't know anything about it, but you do have to keep quiet.
E.J.: Why should I?
Sami: Because this is about catching André and stopping him.
E.J.: About catching André how?
Sami: The bottom line is... we're gonna use the supposed death of Stefano to stop André from treating every day like it's Halloween.
E.J.: So you're gonna use my father's death to lure André to the funeral so you can arrest him. That's not a bad plan, actually. It's not like the Salem Police Department at all.
Sami: You think it will work?
Sami: Me neither. But my dad said we have to try, and I just have a really bad feeling about this, so since I can't do anything but sit here, that's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna sit here and read these letters until I can figure out how to end this...war.
E.J.: Fine. Let's do that, shall we?
Sami: No, E.J., you have to go to the funeral. You have to make it look real.
E.J.: But I thought that we already agreed André's not gonna turn up for the funeral. I'm more use reading these letters with you than I am standing at my father's mock funeral trying to look sad. Unless you've got Lucas as your book-club partner.
Sami: Lucas doesn't think the letters will help.
E.J.: Well, then, it's just you and me. But, um, will you do me one small favor? Don't throw any breakables at me. I'm still picking the glass out of my hair from the last time.
Sami: Give me a break. I was on painkillers and you took advantage of that.
E.J.: Oh, is that how you remember it?
Sami: That's how it happened.
E.J.: Funny, because as I remember it, we just got a little caught up reading the letters from Santo and Colleen.
Sami: Well, maybe you were caught up in it.
E.J.: Oh, well...you'll have no problem with us continuing to read the letters because you weren't affected by it in the slightest.
Sami: You crossed a line, E.J., and you knew it. I was drugged. You tried to take advantage of that, and you thought I was defenseless. Well, you were wrong.
E.J.: I did nothing of the sort. I was affected by those letters, as were you.
Sami: Not so affected that I wanted to kiss the nearest guy.
E.J.: You were affected, though, eh?
E.J.: Maybe. Well, all I'm saying is that, you know, it took you a little while to break away from the kiss. One might almost be forgiven for thinking that you enjoyed it.
Sami: You know what? Get out. I can read these letters by myself. That's it. Go.
E.J.: Okay. All right, look -- I'll behave. I'll sit here in the corner. Over here.
Sami: Fine, but stay there in your corner.
E.J.: Okay. Just remember, you said I could stay here. It was your choice.
Sami: Don't make me regret it.
Philip: Belle, why are you crying?
Belle: I'm happy for you.
Philip: And that's all it is? Happiness?
Belle: Yeah. Life's great, you know? My fiancé doesn't trust me, and...I just didn't sleep last night.
Philip: Call and tell the guy how you feel.
Belle: I feel frustrated. I'm just -- I'm fed up with talking about what I feel and what I want to feel. I don't know what kind of future we can have if I constantly have to defend myself.
Philip: Yeah, I couldn't agree with you more.
Belle: I mean, you did everything you could to help us find Claire in Chicago. It's only right that I do the same for you.
Philip: Actually, Belle, there's a big difference. And you should go home, be with Shawn. I can find Tyler on my own.
Shawn D.: So, tell me how you really feel about me, Mom, and don't hold back, okay?
Bo: Excuse me. Will you do me a favor? Make me a martini for Kate, and make it strong. André's got her tied in knots.
Shawn D.: Glad I can be of some use to somebody.
Bo: Whoa. What was that about?
Hope: That is called tough love. You just trust me on this, okay? He's fine. Or he will be...eventually. I have it under control. I can handle this. You just concentrate on the funeral and diaper duty.
Bo: You know, about diaper duty --
Hope: You know, it's working out just perfectly for me. I have so much more time on my hands.
Bo: Did I tell you how pretty you look today?
Shawn D.: One martini... extra strong.
Bo: Thanks, kid.
Shawn D.: And thank you, Mom, for all the support.
Hope: Shawn, you wait a second.
Shawn D.: No. I've been beat up enough today. You can argue for Philip tomorrow.
Hope: No, you wait, and you stop right there. I am not on Philip's side. You know that. I never have been.
Bo: I'm gonna give Williams a call at the funeral home. Make sure everything's quiet.
Roman: All right, good. Kate...take it easy. It's early in the day.
Kate: So what? Who cares? My life is a mess. [Sighing] Oh, God. Roman, tell me -- I slept with Stefano. I've spent years of my life trying to make your daughter's life miserable. Why do you even bother with me anymore?
Roman: So you want to know why I bother with you, huh? Well, Katie, I bother with you --
Anna: Well, we're here, but you know I hate wearing dark colors when I'm in a good... mood.
Roman: What are you waiting for? Come over here and say hello.
Bo: Tony, excuse me. Sorry to interrupt. I need to ask you a couple questions about the funeral.
Tony: Yes, of course. Do you think you can behave yourself?
Anna: Oh [Chuckles] Don't I always? You go have a nice chat. Well, Roman is even more dashing than usual.
Roman: Thank you. Um...you haven't met Kate, have you, Anna?
Kate: Anna, I saw your photograph when I woke up this morning.
Roman: Kate is staying in my guest bedroom.
Kate: I didn't realize that was taken so long ago.
Roman: She is staying there for her safety while André's on the loose.
Anna: Oh. Oh. Isn't Roman just the sweetest man you've ever known? You know, there's nothing he loves more than playing the hero for poor, weak, defenseless --
Roman: Anna, can we just --
Tony: Well, sorry all. Kate, what a delight. It's been so many years.
Roman: You know what, Tony? Would you have a seat, please? I have some things I need to take care of.
Tony: Well, certainly.
Anna: Honey, would you excuse me for a minute?
Tony: Uh, yeah. Where are you going?
Anna: Well, why don't you two catch up? I'll be right back.
Tony: So...when was the last time we saw each other?
Kate: Um...New Orleans, Mardi Gras.
Tony: Not the Commerce Ball? Oh, you were such a vision.
Kate: [Gasps] Were?
Tony: You still are.
Anna: Roman, I just wanted to say that we're very grateful. Our lives are in your hands and...well, there's no better hands to be in.
Kate: Hmm. Funerals bring out strange behavior in some people. Wouldn't you say, Tony?
Shawn D.: Sure, I get jealous, but it's not because I don't trust Belle. It's Philip.
Hope: If you could see yourself right now -- how wound up and angry you are.
Shawn D.: It's the same way that Philip was acting when he had us on the run. Sure didn't change the way Belle feels about him.
Hope: For whatever reason, she wants to stay friends with him and you need to accept that, because if you don't, you're gonna destroy your relationship with Belle all on your own, honey.
Belle: She went down pretty quickly. I think she was pretty tired from the trip.
Philip: Belle, you didn't answer me. The way things are with you and Shawn right now, if anything happened to make it worse and I ended up feeling responsible --
Philip: You guys made a promise to share your lives. I should not be asking you to run around the country helping me.
Belle: So you want me to go? You want me to just take Claire and go?
Philip: You know what I want most of all? I want to start having fun again. You remember fun?
Belle: No, I don't. I remember running and hiding, being told what ship to jump off of or what bar to go live over. And, yes, I am angry, and, yes, I resent it, and, yes, maybe I resent Shawn for turning my life in-- into this.
E.J.: Whenever you're ready.
Sami: Would you just sit still and be quiet?
E.J.: All right. Avanti, huh?
Sami: "When I ran from your room that night, Santo -- our first night together -- I knew you'd be hurt and confused. Lord, no more than me. But I promised you I would return and return I did."
Santo: Colleen, I was not certain I was going to see you again.
Colleen: How could you doubt it?
Sami: "Santo, I knew it was wrong, but, dear God, help me. Never in all my life had I felt that way -- so..."
E.J.: So? Samantha...what is it? Look, I doubt I'm crossing your lines. I haven't moved.
Sami: No, it's not that. It's not you.
E.J.: Then what is it?
Sami: When I first started reading these letters, it was like...I don't know, like I was reading a novel. But somehow I've crossed this line, like -- I feel like it's happening to me. My Great Aunt Colleen. And we all know that family matters, and we have responsibilities and obligations...but I understand. Maybe this happened an ocean away and half a century back, but I have -- I have been there more times in my life than I care to count. When you want something so passionately...that's all that matters in that moment and you don't care who gets hurt. I feel like I'm in her shoes. I'm with her right now.
Santo: [Speaks Italian]
Colleen: Santo, if I lie with you again, I'll never have the strength to leave.
Santo: Good. I don't want you to leave.
Colleen: And tomorrow.
Santo: Colleen, there will be no tomorrow. The world as we know it, it changed from this moment.
Sami: Colleen, no. Don't do it.
E.J.: Why not?
Sami: Because if she does it, we know how it ends.
E.J.: So you want to say no to love?
Santo: Colleen, can you say no to love?
Colleen: All these feelings.
Santo: I know, Colleen.
Sami: I know how strong they are.
Sami: Get off me, all right? He is pushing her too far.
Santo: Tell me -- how do you feel in your heart?
Sami: What does your soul tell you?
E.J.: How much is true love worth? What would you give for that?
Sami: Think what you're giving up, Colleen.
Sami: No! No! Damn it. I could have stopped her.
E.J.: It wouldn't have changed a thing. It was their curse and their blessing to cross that line hand in hand. It was their fate.
Sami: Oh, stop it, okay? You don't know anything about fate. Fate is -- fate is meeting your best friend when you're a teenager and then struggling for years apart before you realize that what makes you the happiest is what's been right there in front of you all along.
E.J.: Oh, I see. You live happily ever after, is that it?
Sami: Yeah, because that is my fate, and that's what I'm --
E.J.: Sami? Are you all right? Hey, look, are you okay?
Sami: I'm fine, okay? Just Roman Thomas is kicking me.
E.J.: Roman Thomas? I thought you decided that you weren't going to call --
Sami: Yeah, well, I changed my mind. The look on my dad's face said it all, so...
E.J.: Do you see? You're choosing to live your life to please your father.
Sami: Well, I guess both our fathers have traditions. Maybe that's something we have in common.
E.J.: I think it's a lot more than that.
Philip: I had no idea you felt that way.
Belle: I'm sorry. It just came out. I don't want you to think that --
Philip: I don't think anything. You know, but I do know what you're feeling. You know, with everything so out of balance, I don't know what day it is sometimes.
Belle: You know what? You're gonna find your son and hold him in your arms, and you're never gonna miss anything again.
Philip: When you say that... I believe it. [Knock on door] Did you order room service?
Philip: April -- Miss Hudson, come in.
April: I'm really sorry. I should have called.
Philip: Hey, it's no problem. Is something wrong?
April: Actually, yes. Very wrong.
Shawn D.: I don't know what to do anymore. If I try and hold tight, I get jealous. If I try to loosen up and give her some room, Philip swoops in with his presents, his money, and his mansion.
Hope: Who cares about things? This is a brand-new beginning for you and Belle -- nursing school, the police academy. This could be the best time of your lives. Enjoy it. Enjoy it.
Kate: You and Roman seemed awfully cozy.
Anna: Well, why wouldn't we be? My relationship with Roman is based on something more than pity.
Tony: Oh, come on, ladies. Can we talk about something a little more interesting than the subject of Roman Brady?
Bo: Excuse me. Tony, sorry to interrupt again, but I need your help.
Tony: Oh, no, not at all. Would you excuse me, ladies? I'll only be a minute.
Kate: Of course. If you must, you must.
Anna: Well [Chuckles] I hope my little moment with Roman --
Kate: Oh, no. Don't worry about it. I mean, it was meaningless.
Anna: [Chuckles] Yes, and I understand that you and he had, uh, what was it, some sort of meaningless summer affair.
Kate: We were married.
Anna: Mmm. That's right. But ever-so briefly.
Roman: For 20 years...I believed the vendetta was about me -- your revenge for my bringing down your drug ring. And all that time, Stefano, I had to live with the thoughts that everything that happened since was my fault -- Hope missing. Steve missing. Years and years missing from all our lives we can't get back. Lives destroyed. I told you we would settle that score one day, Stefano. Well, that day is here. That day is now.
Roman: It would be so easy. Just pull the trigger, you get what you deserve. But I'm not gonna go down to your level, Stefano. I'll wait. We'll settle this score the right way. But it will be settled.
Willy: [Clears throat] Excuse me, sir.
Roman: Willy, yeah. Come on in. Bring that in here. Put it over here.
Roman: Everything ready?
Officer: Safe house is set. There's a coffin like this one, but it's empty outside in the hearse.
Roman: Okay, you drive it to the graveyard after the services just like we planned. Any more flowers come, put them up by the coffin.
Willy: But these aren't for Mr. DiMera, sir.
Roman: What are you talking about?
Willy: Well, the guy that delivered them said that I should bring them to you.
Tony: [Sighs] You know, André has had time to think now. If Stefano were dead, that boy would be back in Italy by now.
Bo: We've always known there was a risk.
Tony: Yeah, the risks are higher than you think. He's a predator. He likes to play with his food before he rips it open. Watch your back.
Kate: Why do you care so much about Roman's love life anyway? Didn't you dump him and run after Tony?
Anna: [Laughs] Well, it's true. I am back with Tony. But I heard that you were revisiting your ever-so-checkered past with Stefano. Isn't there a word for that?
Kate: Whatever. I'm out of here.
Bo: Hey, Kate. Why don't you come over to the bar? I need you safe and sound today. So why don't you have a drink right here on the house to make yourself happy?
Hope: Or at least try.
Shawn D.: There you go.
Shawn D.: Yep. I had a feeling.
Philip: But you just called 20 minutes ago. How could that happen?
April: I went in to set up the meeting and she was gone, all her belongings. The only thing she left behind was this note.
Philip: "Look all you want, but I swear you'll never find me again...or your son." My son.
Sami: Oh, give it a rest, would you?
E.J.: The truth never rests. You know that.
Sami: Oh, so now you are going to lecture me about truth.
E.J.: And the truth of the matter is, look -- we both know what it is to live up to the high expectations of fathers, right? Okay. And the thought of how happy we might be if we turn our back on those expectations and we make our own choices -- that frightens us.
Sami: Like Colleen.
E.J.: Yes, like Colleen. Well, like when she wrote this a few days later. Here -- "my dearest Santo, the days were endless, each flowing into the next, each more wondrous than the day before and the day before that and the day before that."
Colleen: "In the casual comedy, he, too, has been changed in his turn. Transformed literally."
Santo: Colleen, this is your favorite, but it is very sad.
Colleen: It speaks to the Irish heart. Loud and true. It's how I feel when I look at you, Santo. My life, my world...transformed literally. And so it is when someone is overpowered by love.
Santo: You love me, Colleen?
Colleen: [Speaks Italian]
Santo: Tell me, how do you know what you feel is true love?
Colleen: Are you thinking that I'd be giving you my virtue if I wasn't for certain that I loved?
Santo: And loved utterly.
Colleen: Utterly. And you, Santo...are you that sure you love as you do?
Santo: Love, Colleen...has many faces. It finds many forms, but true love, our love... is inevitable. Inevitable.
E.J.: It's fated to be.
Sami: And the vendetta was fated, too.
E.J.: Love has many faces, Samantha.
Santo: Colleen Brady.
Colleen: Santo, what are --
Santo: Shh. Colleen Brady...will you marry me?
Sami: Marry him. How could he push her like that?
E.J.: Samantha, he's trying and the only way that he knows how to stop the tragedy that he can see coming, a tragedy fated to be from the moment that they met.
Colleen: Santo, I'm sorry. I can't.
Santo: I thought you loved me, Colleen. You were telling me --
Colleen: I told the fathers on earth and in heaven that I'd say no to all desires.
Santo: No. Colleen, that girl is no longer. You are now a woman. You're a woman in love.
Colleen: Santo, please. Please, I can't do this. My life, my mortal soul rests on this choice. I can't be making a decision under pressure like this.
Colleen: Soon. Soon. Trust me. You'll have your answer soon.
E.J.: That poem.
Sami: What, the one Colleen was reading?
E.J.: It's Yates. I suddenly remember the last stanza. "All changed, changed utterly. A terrible beauty is born." They knew that they were fated to love. They knew that it was their destiny. Colleen struggled to resist it. She tried to resist her own fate and...
E.J.: And a terrible beauty was born.
Philip: She wasn't after money. I offered her a quarter-million dollars and she turns it down. Why? To punish me? For what?
Belle: I don't know. I can't explain Lauren. But your son is innocent in all of this, and he deserves to have a great father, so you have to find him.
Philip: God, how did I ever even get through a day without you? My best friend.
Belle: Well, you'll never have to wonder because I am your friend. I'll always be here for you.
Kate: Another round, bartender.
Shawn D.: You know, I don't get you.
Kate: Well, of course you don't. I'm a complicated woman.
Shawn D.: Yeah, but you're sexy and --
Shawn D.: You're rich. You're successful.
Kate: Well, two out of three isn't bad. You see, all of my accounts -- they're frozen.
Shawn D.: Exactly. You've got so many great things going for you, and you always seem to screw things up, except Philip. Guess it's genetic.
Kate: Really? Like bartending? Because...you make a really lousy martini. You know that? And as for Philip, I wouldn't really fret about him, because, you see, my son -- he always gets what he deserves in the end.
Shawn D.: I hope you both do.
Tony: I don't know why Kate blasted you so, and why did you attack her?
Anna: Attack her? How dare you attack me and defend her? Roman, did you hear him?
Bo: Good evening, mourners.
Hope: Whoa. Somebody's horse came in, huh?
Bo: Our plan must be working. Somebody's sending flowers to Stefano.
Roman: Problem is, the guy from the florist said they were for me.
Hope: So who are they from? What did the card say?
Roman: No card.
Hope: There has to be a card with an arrangement like this. Did you look? Did you wear your glasses today, Roman? Oh, you know what? It was hidden in the bow. Here. You couldn't have seen it. It was in the bow. Don't give me that look.
Bo: What does it say, Roman?
Anna: Roman, what is it?
Philip: You know what I think we both need?
Belle: Um...a shower. I think we could all use one. So, I'm gonna go first. You don't mind, do you?
Belle: Okay, thanks.
E.J.: Whoa, whoa, whoa. What are you doing?
Sami: I'm skipping ahead. I want to see what she decides. This one is -- okay, we'll try this one. It's four letters later. "My dear Colleen..."
Santo: Colleen, I cannot go on this way.
Colleen: And you think I can with my eyes lifted to the Lord on the cross, my heart brimming with lies, my body corrupted?
Santo: Corrupted? Corrupted? Is that how I make you feel?
Colleen: No. No, Santo. But I need more time, please.
Santo: No, Colleen. It has to end, all right? Either we finish or we begin. You choose a life with me or a life with the church. You make a decision tonight -- right here tonight.
Hope: Roman, what does the card say?
Roman: Bo, be my guest.
Bo: "So sad to hear of your untimely death. André."
Kate: Shawn. Shawn, I need a refill!
[Banging on door]
Kate: No, me first. I knocked first. Shawn, I need a refill! Shawn, there's someone at the door! There's someone at the door! What -- I-I'm not the doorman! Would you go -- go away. We're closed. We're closed. Go away.
Kate: Oh, my God. Oh, my God, no. Shawn! Shawn! No!
Sami: And maybe that's why he killed her.
E.J.: He did not kill her.
Sami: Give me one good reason why he didn't.
E.J.: He couldn't have killed her. I couldn't kill you if my life depended on it.
Lucas: E.J., got a message for you. It's from your dead father.
Hope: That explains it.
Marlena: Explains what?
Hope: Why Bo just lied to me.
Marlena: Where are you going?
Hope: To find the truth.
