Beth: (Sighs)

Hope: Grandma, what's wrong?

Beth: Oh, honey, what makes you think that something's wrong?

Hope: You look so sad. Mommy, Grandpa, Grandma's here. She came to visit.

Brooke: Mom?

Beth: Hello. (Chuckles)

Stephen: Are you all right, Beth?

Beth: Yes, I'm fine. How did you know where to find me?

Brooke: Catherine, our babysitter, called. But don't be upset. She was just worried.

Beth: Oh, I'm not upset.

Brooke: What brought you here?

Beth: I'm not sure.

Hope: Grandma said she wanted to see me.

Beth: I did. That's right. I wanted to see you right before I left.

Hope: Grandma, I don't want you to leave.

Beth: Oh, sweetheart.

Brooke: You heard her, Mom. None of us want you to leave.

Beth: (Sighs)

Phoebe: I can tell you're still upset that Marcus is Donna's son.

Ridge: It just worries me to hear it from you instead of your sister. I don't understand her loyalties to this kid. Why would she keep something something like this from her family?

Phoebe: You think Marcus convinced her to keep his secret?

Ridge: It wasn't just his secret, phoebe. This was Donna's secret. She brought Marcus into this company. She hid him in plain sight right under dad's nose. She knew this would be a bad situation for us, for our family. But she kept it to herself anyway, and that's not like her. That's what worries me.

Marcus: So you're, uh, you're too busy, huh, to figure it out?

Steffy: Figure what out?

Marcus: Hot or cold?

Steffy: No one's made up their mind about you, Marcus.

Marcus: Not even you?

Steffy: I like what I see so far.

Marcus: Huh. You know, maybe you'd like to see more.

Steffy: (Laughs)

Marcus: You know, we could go out again-- that place at the beach.

Steffy: Bikini beach. You like it, huh?

Marcus: Yeah. Company wasn't that bad, either.

Steffy: You'd say.

Marcus: Was it?

Steffy: I had a good time.

Marcus: Me, too. I had a great time.

Katie: Brooke?

Nick: No.

Katie: Oh.

Nick: Oh?

Katie: Uhh, I just-- I wish we'd hear something.

Nick: Hear something about what?

Katie : My mom--she left. She went back to Paris.

Nick: What do you mean, she left? She just got here.

Katie: I know, but she doesn't want to stay. She doesn't want to hurt us.

Nick: Hurt you how?

Katie: (Sighs) Nick, it's so sad.

Nick: What's sad? Tell me. W-what are you talking about?

Katie: She-- she explained to me why she's been so strange lately.

Nick: Okay. Why's she been so strange?

Katie: Apparently she's had a series of small strokes... (sighs) and she feels like she has the early signs of dementia.

Nick: Oh. I'm sorry.

Katie: I-I tried to tell her that it didn't matter, I--but she feels obsolete. She feels like she doesn't have anything to offer.

Nick: Right. Well, we know that's not true.

Katie: Of course not. I-I tried to tell her how much we all love her, no matter what, but she left as soon as I turned my back.

Nick: Well, were did she go?

Katie: I'm assuming the airport. Dad and Brooke are looking for her right now.

Nick: Well, they'll find her.

Katie: What happens if they do? How do we get through to her? How do we reach her?

Beth: You don't understand, Brooke.

Brooke: I do. Katie told us.

Beth: Well, then you must realize that--

Brooke: What I realize, Mom, is that you need your family more than ever.

Beth: I don't want to be a burden.

Brooke: You won't be.

Beth: You don't know that.

Brooke: You've spent all these years raising us. Now it's our turn to take care of you.

Beth: Hey. I am your mother. I do the taking care of around here.

Brooke: No. You have done your share, all these years, until we were grown.

Hope: What's a burden?

Brooke: (Sighs) well, your grandmother isn't one, no matter what she thinks.

Beth: (Sighs)

Phoebe: I just can't believe Steffy would put Marcus ahead of the family. I mean, she can't be that in to him.

Ridge: Did she tell you she was in to him? Is that how you found out he was Donna's son, because she said she cares for the guy?

Phoebe: I-I jus-- I heard them talking. I-I saw her at the bonfire, and when I went over to say hi--

Ridge: Bonfire? You mean at the beach?

Phoebe: The club-- Bikini Beach.

Ridge: On a date?

Phoebe: I do--I don't know. I mean, they were definitely friendly.

Ridge: (Exhales deeply) Donna has sunk her hooks into this family deep enough. And now her son's going after my daughter?

Phoebe: No, dad, it's not like that. I-I think that Marcus and Steffy really like each other.

Ridge: That's exactly what I'm worried about, Phoebe.

Marcus: So I'm guessing word's gonna get around pretty fast, huh?

Steffy: About you being Donna's son? Good guess. So are you nervous?

Marcus: What, about word gettin' around? Nah.

Steffy: Should be. Gossip around here can be pretty brutal.

Marcus: Well, Eric's accepted me. I mean, doesn't everyone take their cues from him?

Steffy: Guess we're gonna find out, aren't we?

Marcus: I think someone is trying to make me nervous.

Steffy: Could I do that?

Marcus: Mmm, yeah. You're definitely someone who can make me nervous.

Steffy: (Laughs) oh, really?

Marcus: I'm getting sweaty palms just looking at you.

Steffy: (Laughs) okay. Uh, I'll take that as a compliment, I think.

Marcus: Oh, it is, trust me.

Steffy: Huh.

Marcus: What are you doing?

Steffy: Sweaty palms, racing heartbeat. Hmm. Interesting. Very interesting.

Katie: The last thing Mom needs to be is alone somewhere just sitting waiting to die.

Nick: Why wouldn't she tell anybody about this?

Katie: Pride, I guess. She doesn't want to be a burden.

Nick: (Sighs heavily) Well, I can understand that.

Katie: Well, so can I. If anyone understands that, it's me. But I'm not going to let her just disappear. I am not gonna let that happen.

Katie: (Sighs)

Bridget: Katie? What's wrong?

Katie: It's my mom.

Bridget: What happened?

Katie: She's had a series of small strokes.

Bridget: What?

Katie: She's fine, physically. She's fully recovered, but mentally, she's not all there. She's--she thinks it's early signs of dementia. She's losing her memories.

Bridget: Oh, God, I am so sorry. That's why she's been so distant. Where is she right now? Is she upstairs?

Katie: No. She left.

Bridget: Well, where would she go?

Katie: I-I-I'm guessing the airport. Dad and Brooke are looking for her. I just wish they would call.

Stephen: Hope, sweetie, why don't we let Mommy and Grandma have a nice talk, okay?

Hope: Okay. Grandma, will you say good-bye before you leave?

Beth: Oh, sweetie.

Brooke: She's not going anywhere, sweetie.

Hope: I'm glad.

Beth: Oh.

Hope: I love you, Grandma.

Beth: Oh, I love you, too, baby.

Stephen: Come on, sweetheart. Let's go find Catherine. Let's go.

Brooke: (Sighs heavily) We have a lot to talk about.

Beth: It's best if I go.

Brooke: Best for whom?

Beth: For everyone.

Brooke: Mom, how can you say that after everything that's happened?

Beth: I-you said that you talked to Katie. I-I thought you knew that--

Brooke: She said that you were suffering some strokes, having some memory loss, yes.

Beth: Brooke, my life, my past, all of the good times that we shared when I was raising you girls and your brother-- it's leaving me.

Brooke: Mom, why didn't you come to us?

Beth: What would have been the point?

Brooke: Because we're family. That's what we're for. We're supposed to come together in good times and bad.

Beth: Honey, I don't even know how much longer I will realize you are family.

Brooke: Well, then we need to treasure the time that we can share together... now.

Brooke: (Sniffles) (sighs) (phone rings)

Katie: Hello?

Brooke: Katie, we found her.

Katie: Oh, thank God. How is she?

Brooke: Well, Mom's a little stubborn, but she didn't leave yet. And she's not going to. Our mother is not going anywhere.

Beth: (Inhales sharply) I don't know why you are trying so hard to force me to stay.

Brooke: What do you want, Mom? You want to go back to Paris, be all alone?

Beth: I'm content with my life. I'm not alone. I have friends. And I have a lovely apartment. I'll stay there as long as I can, and when that's no longer possible, I've made arrangements--

Brooke: Stop! Just stop. You're talking to me like I'm some kind of stranger. I'm your daughter.

Beth: And I need you to know that I am prepared.

Brooke: Prepared? Well, I'm not prepared. It's not gonna happen this way.

Beth: Yeah, that's because you're in denial. I understand, Brooke, believe me. I was, too.

Brooke: (Sighs) Mom, you can come back from this. People recover from strokes all the time.

Beth: Please, just let me go. I have had a wonderful time. I've seen my girls again. It's been great. I saw and spent some precious times with your little girl. And--you know, I can't believe she remembers about the music box. She knows about it.

Brooke: Of course she does. That was the most precious gift I've gotten from you in all the years. (Sighs) it still works, you know?

Beth: Yes, I-I saw. You used--you used to sit and play it and watch the ballerina dance for hours. (Laughs)

Brooke: I remember. (Laughs) (sniffles)

Beth: Oh.

Brooke: And you remember, too, Mom.

Beth: Mm-hmm.

Brooke: You do remember.

Beth: Oh, I... (sniffles) I see you in your little girl, honey.

Brooke: (Sniffles)

Beth: (Laughs)

Brooke: And I see you in her. You can't disappear. We've finally come back together.

Beth: Brooke, whether I go or not, I'm going to disappear. I have no control over that. The only thing I can control is whether or not I subject my family to it, and I wont. I simply won't.

Ridge: I don't like what's going on with Marcus and your sister.

Phoebe: Dad, come on. They're just--they're friends.

Ridge: We don't know anything about this kid. Steffy doesn't either, not really.

Phoebe: Well, he seems nice.

Ridge: Don't you think it's a little convenient he shows up right when his mom's gonna marry a very powerful, wealthy guy?

Phoebe: I guess.

Ridge: Thousands of young guys out there, and your sister decides she's gonna hang out with this one.

Phoebe: Maybe if you leave it alone it'll go away.

Ridge: Yeah, right. What do you think the chances are? No, Phoebe, I can't leave it alone. I have to do what's best for your sister.

Phoebe: (Sighs)

Marcus: So, um, look, if you don't want to go to that place on the beach, how about we go bowling?

Steffy: Bowling? Are you serious?

Marcus: Yeah. What, you don't "do" bowling?

Steffy: You think I'm a prima Donna, don't you?

Marcus: No. I just think that bowling's not your thing.

Steffy: Dude, I love bowling.

Marcus: You do?

Steffy: Uh, yeah. I'm pretty good.

Marcus: Mm-hmm. How good?

Steffy: I guess you're gonna have to find out, huh?

Marcus: Oh. Oh, so we're on?

Steffy: Ohh, we're on.

Marcus: Oh, we're on.

Steffy: (Laughs)

Bridget: But, Katie, she is okay?

Katie: Yeah, yeah. I mean, at least she's not on a plane to Paris. Is--is this always what happens after someone has a stroke? I mean, I there always memory loss?

Bridget: Katie, we don't know what kind of stroke your mom's had, exactly how severe or how she's impaired or what kind of treatment she's had, but, you know, symptoms like dementia are often a result of strokes. And m-memory loss certainly isn't uncommon.

Katie: Well... (sighs) can't she be helped? I mean, is it gonna get worse? Because that's what she thinks.

Bridget: I would have to know more about her treatment and her diagnosis. You know what I could do is call the neurology department at work and have her scheduled for some tests.

Katie: Oh, my God, if you could do that, that would be great. I-I would so appreciate it. Thank you.

Bridget: Well, of course, honey, of course. Um, I'll just go make some calls. And, listen, if there is a way to help your mom, we'll figure it out.

Katie: Okay.

Nick: Well, if there's a good cause, she's on it.

Katie: Yeah, you two have that in common. Thank you. Thank you so much for bring my mom back to Los Angeles.

Nick: You already thanked me.

Katie: You knew how much I needed her. What we didn't know is how much she needs us. We never would've known if it weren't for you.

Nick: (Scoffs)

Beth: I should head to the airport.

Brooke: There aren't anymore flights to Paris tonight. I checked.

Beth: Yes, well, my flight leaves in the morning.

Brooke: (Sighs) Then tonight you stay here with me and with your grandchildren.

Beth: Well, I guess I don't have much choice, do I? (Sighs)

Brooke: I want you here, Mom. Don't you understand? The grandchildren want you here. You heard hope before.

Beth: Oh, my God, do you have any idea how difficult you are making this for me? Of course I want to stay with you, but I'm a realist, Brooke. I know how this turns out. I have seen this tear families apart. I have seen it turn love into pity and then into resentment. And I don't want that for me, and I certainly don't want to put you through it.

Brooke: Picture that little girl holding her music box, worshipping you. You're looking at that little girl now, Mom.

Beth: Mm.

Brooke: And that little girl doesn't want you to leave.

Beth: (Exhales deeply) I can't stand these spots.

Bridget: All right, so I called the hospital and got an appointment for your mom.

Katie: Oh, thank you. What do you think? Do you think there's any help for her?

Bridget: Oh, it's really hard to say. We need to know exactly what we're dealing with before we can assess my grandmother's situation.

Nick: Wait, do you think she'd agree to these tests? You would know.

Katie: Oh, we're not giving her any choice. I just hope that Brooke can convince her to stay. Bridget, thank you again...

Bridget: Ohh.

Katie: For everything you've done. Um, I-I'm gonna go lay down. You always come through for me.

Bridget: Well, I'm really glad that I can help.

Bridget: (Sighs) Poor Katie. I just--

Nick: Hey.

Bridget: Everything she's been through. And now this?

Nick: She's lucky. She's got you on her side.

Bridget: No.

Nick: I'm lucky, too.

Beth: Is hope all right?

Stephen: Oh, she's fine. She, uh, wants you to stay in her room with her.

Beth: Oh.

Brooke: I'm still having a hard time convincing Mom that we want her to stay here with us.

Beth: Oh, please, don't you start in, too, Stephen.

Stephen: Beth, I feel terrible leaving you alone in Paris. If I'd have had any idea what you were going through, I would--

Beth: But you didn't, and there was nothing you could have done anyway. Besides, the children needed you.

Stephen: Yes, but you needed me, too. And I wasn't there.

Beth: Well, I won't stay here and become a burden to my family. I cannot live with that.

Stephen: Beth, you are exhausted. This is no time to make decisions...

Beth: (Sighs)

Stephen: About the rest of your life. There are plans to be made, things to think about.

Beth: And I am still capable of making those plans. I have made most of them. I don't need you and the girls to do it for me.

Brooke: Mom... (sighs) our connection is more than just moments from our past. You nourished me. You carried me for nine months. You gave me life. And each one of your kids-- they have something from you. Katie has your smile. Donna has your eyes. Even my children-- they have your warmth, your kindness. We're all intertwined, bound together forever, no matter how close or how far apart we are.

Stephen: Beth, you can't imagine how much your daughters love you. Do you think they would have any peace knowing what you're going through if you're halfway around the world and alone?

Brooke: Dad's right, Mom. We love you so much. And you could never, ever be a burden to us. So, please, please, don't cut us out of your life.

Brooke: (Sniffles) (Sniffles)

Beth: (Exhales deeply) (Exhales)
