Let's go have some let's go have some fun oh yeah

Katie: laughs

yeah yeah yeah let's go have some fun

Nick: (Laughs) You-you're good. You like to lead.

Katie: I know, it's a problem. I want to dance to another one.

Nick: I don't know. Are you doing okay? I mean, I'm getting a little fried here.

Katie: Yes, I'm fine. Thanks to Bridget's pain pill.  Here.

I might need one or two of those before the night's over, so... This is one of my favorites. Ohh.  Mmm.

Nick: What's the matter?

Katie: Nothing, I'm fine.  I just, uhh -- maybe we should sit this one out. Uh, how about some punch?

Nick: Yeah, yeah, okay. One thing first, okay?

Bridget: All right, all right. Well, just call me as soon as it comes in.  Okay, thanks.

Brooke:  What is it? What did you learn?

Bridget: It's not looking great.  We're losing her, and I don't understand why because we could not have more of a perfect match. I don't get why her body is rejecting this heart. It doesn't make sense.

Stephanie: Well, do you know how she's doing right now?

Bridget: Nick texted me a little bit ago and said that she's weak, but doing okay.

Stephanie: I hope she's enjoying herself.

Bridget: Yeah, me, too.

[Camera shutter clicks]

Nick: let's try one cheek to cheek.

Katie: Okay.

[Camera shutter clicks]

Nick: Nice.  Allright, turn around this way.

Katie: Allright. Oh, yes, let's get the corsage.

Nick: Are you smiling?

Katie: I'm smiling.

Nick: Okay, I'll smile, too.

[Camera shutter clicks]

Nick: How about that?

Katie: I had no idea you were such a photographer.

Nick You can't have prom without photographs. Okay, stupid smile.

Katie: All right.

[Camera shutter clicks]

Nick: Good, good.

Katie: That's true.  Photos are forever.

Nick: Okay, let me have just a couple by myself. Okay, punch time.

Katie: I hope it's spiked.

Nick: This is your seat, my dear.

Holding you close, I see  All of that magic

Nick: What's going on?  You have that faraway look in your eyes.

Katie: I guess this night just reminds me of another night that wasn't so nice.

Nick: Prom night?

Katie:  Mm-mm.  I was such a nerd in high school. [Laughs]  It was awful. Brooke and Donna-- they were always the popular ones. You know, Brooke was the homecoming queen, and Donna was lead cheerleader.

Nick: I just lost respect for both of them.

Katie: (Laughs) They were always surrounded by guys.

Nick: Boys, not men.

Katie: Not like you.

Nick: Well, I don't know about that.

Katie: High school was rough. I am definitely not one of those people that want to go back and live it again. I remember looking at all of those popular kids and wanting so badly to be a part of their group. You know, it's funny the things we find important when we're young. You know, everything is the end of the world. Everything is life and death. There was this boy, and I was so in love with him-- from afar, of course--

Nick: Uh-oh. Don't tell me-- a football hero, one of those star guys, chiseled jaw.

Katie: Yes, absolutely. All of the above.

Nick: Right, right.

Katie: And he was in my biology class, and we would share notes and talk, and we never really talked outside of class because we didn't exactly run in the same circles. Then one day out of the blue, he... oh, it's silly. I don't even know why we're talking about this.

Nick: Because it's important to you, so, please, go on.

Katie: He asked me to the prom.

Nick: And?

Katie: (Sighs) I'm about to share a deep, dark secret that I haven't told anyone, not even my sisters.

Nick: I'm all ears.

Katie: I might need another pain pill before this.

Brooke: Honey, you've done the best that you can, no matter what happens.

Bridget: Oh, Mom, no matter what happens? I don't want to hear that. I--there's only gonna be one outcome that I can live with.

Stephanie: Katie seems to be, um, very fond of Nick.

Bridget: She kissed him, you know.

Stephanie: She what?

Bridget: They kissed.

Brooke: A friendly kiss.

Stephanie: Why the hell would you agree to go along with this prom thing?

Bridget: Well, that's exactly why I agreed to go along with this prom thing-- 'cause it'll mean so much to her.

Brooke: And that doesn't bother you?

Bridget: No, mom. No. I know that Nick is committed to me, but Katie needs him right now, and I want him to be there for her to give her this moment of joy.

Oh you've taken a place in my heart that's where you'll stay

Nick: So the big man on campus asked you to the prom?

Katie: Uh, yeah. Hmm. And I was shocked. Everyone was, but I didn't question it. I just said, "yes." I was in heaven.

Nick: What happened?

Katie: Storm and I scraped together enough money for a dress, and I spent the entire day getting ready. I did my hair and my makeup, and I waited for him in the living room, and when he finally came to pick me up, Storm, of course, gave him the third degree. (Laughs) And we went to the dance, and I felt like a princess in some fairy tale. I felt beautiful.  And we had fun. We danced. We--we talked to people. I really felt like I was a part of something. People were having a good time. They were smiling. They were laughing, and I thought, you know, maybe he's always liked me, but he was just shy, like me. And--and maybe during the last dance we'll have this moment, and he'll--he'll say something wonderful, he'll tell me how he feels, or--I don't know. I was on top of the world.

Nick: That sounds perfect.

Katie: It was, until the last dance. I watched him go get something to drink, and he was surrounded by his friends, and I looked over at him, and I smiled, and I noticed that they were all laughing. They were looking at me, and they were laughing. And then I saw his friends give him some money...  And I realized that I was a bet. I was a dare. No one ever expected him to take someone like me to the prom. I was a joke. I didn't know what to do. I just-- I stood there, and I felt like everyone was looking at me, everyone was laughing at me, and I will never, ever forget how that felt. Finally I just-- I bolted. I ran out of there as fast as I could. I ran all the way home. I locked myself in my bedroom, and I cried and cried. I hated those people. I still do. You know, I think-- I think the saddest thing about that night isn't what some stupid guy did or--or even the embarrassment that I felt, because you get over that. You know, you--you laugh about it. I just felt like I had lost something. You know, that-- that part of yourself that believes that fairy tales can come true. I had never realized how cruel people can be to each other for no reason. And, you know, sometimes I hear a song in the car, and it takes me back to that night, and I just-- I've so often wished that I could just erase that memory and replace it with something else.

Nick: I'm sorry. Maybe tonight wasn't such a good idea.

Katie: No. (Giggles) Tonight was a perfect idea. Thank you. Thank you for giving me a new memory.

Nick: Well, I think you're beautiful.

Katie: (Laughs)

won't ever have to live a life of shame

Nick: You never got your last dance, did you?

Katie: No.

Nick: May I?

Watching over you when the thunder comes I'm there right by your side when the water falls I'm there to keep you warm and dry I don't know if I have ever been this strong before your love makes me something more your love makes me something more

( soft guitar playing )

(Slow music playing)

at this moment you mean everything to me and there's no place that I'd rather be than here with you

Katie: (Laughs) It's funny. I feel free. I've never been able to let that go.

Nick: That means it's time for new memories.

Katie: That's true. Thank you so much for tonight, for everything. My high school graduation. I guess I'm finally ready to graduate, huh?

Nick: (Chuckles) Summa cum laude, baby.

Katie: (Laughs) mm.

You're the only thing that matters

Katie: I never thought that I would live to see the day I could love someone and trust them so completely. I know that's possible.  Better late than never, right?

At this moment you mean everything to me and there's no place that I'd rather be than here with you at this moment as I'm holding you here in my arms I could stay here forever my love

Katie: Nick...

right here with you

Katie: Do you believe in life after death?

Nick: Katie...

Katie: I'm just curious.

Nick: You mean the kingdom of heaven and all that? I think it's right here. I think the kingdom of heaven is right here.

At this moment

Katie: I think you're right.

You mean everything to me

Katie: I think you're right.

And there's no place

Nick: I'm here for you.

Katie: I know. But I think it's time for this wonderful night to come to an end.

At this moment

Katie: Thank you.

Nick: Wait a minute.

I could stay here forever my love

Nick: (Exhales deeply) what kind of prom date would I be if... (clears throat) if I didn't see you home?

At this moment you mean everything to me

Katie: (Gasps)

and there's no place that I'd rather be than here with you

Bridget: (Sniffles) Where's Stephanie?

Brooke: She left.

Bridget: I didn't even notice.

Brooke: That's because you're so focused.

Bridget: For all the good it's doing, right?

Brooke: Honey... (sighs) You can't take on all this responsibility. You've done everything that you could for Katie.

Bridget: And I've failed.

Brooke: How can you say that? You've given her the most precious gift that anybody could ever give her.

Bridget: Well, she's dying, Mom. She's going to die.

Brooke: Don't you think I know that? But it won't be because of lack of your efforts.

Bridget: Mom...

Brooke: You have made her so happy, sweetheart. You've shared the man that you love with her, and that couldn't have been easy for you. It wasn't, was it?

Bridget: I-I don't even want to think of it like that, Mom. Nick and I have opened up our home to Katie because she's my family and we care about her. We were fighting to give her a second chance at life, and we thought we had won, but we haven't. All we're doing is buying her a little bit more time.

Brooke: Yes, you bought her more time, but honey, it was precious time. You've given her a chance to realize her dreams. Most people go through life and they can never do that. And you have done it for Katie in one night, one precious, memorable night.

Bridget: And it's probably gonna be her last.

Katie: I think I'd like another one of those pain pills.

Nick: I think it's a little too soon.

Katie: I don't think it really matters now.

Nick: Don't say that. I don't want you to think about it like that.

Katie: It's all right. Tonight I felt like the belle of the ball.

Nick: (Chuckles) well, that you are.

Katie: You gave me the most beautiful evening. You're the most beautiful person I've ever known.

Nick: Well, tonight's not over. I'm still here. You know why? Because there isn't one other place I would rather be in the world than here.

Katie: (Sniffles)

Nick: And there's no one I would rather be with than you.

( Loud crunch )

( gasps )
