Brooke: Deacon must have talked to Bridget by now and ended their marriage, but why hasn't she called? My poor baby. She's going to be devastated. Oh, God. How could I let that happen? It was wrong, but it doesn't matter, because Deacon is out of her life, and that marriage is over, and Bridget's going to come home.

Bridget: Hi, mom.

Brooke: Hi, honey. How are you?

Bridget: Miserable.

Brooke: Bridget, you're going to get through this.

Bridget: So I guess you heard, huh? Deacon told you?

Brooke: I've been waiting for you.

Bridget: I thought you might be upset with me.

Brooke: Upset? No. Why would I be upset? This wasn't your fault.

Bridget: It's nice of you to say, Mom, but it was my fault. I have to start taking responsibility.

Brooke: Oh, honey. Listen to me --

Bridget: Mom, you're not gonna help me if you keep letting me off the hook. I just didn't prepare.

Brooke: Oh, how could you possible prepare for something like this?

Bridget: Yeah, yeah. It was a huge test, but it was my first big college exam. I could have studied.

Brooke: What?

Bridget: You know, I thought I was ready, but I was so damn focused on getting into that stupid sorority, and when I got back that paper -- that huge, red "f." What did he say?

Brooke: Who?

Bridget: Deacon. He seemed pretty spacey when I told him over the phone. He must be really bummed about it, too, huh?

Brooke: Bridget, honey, I -- I really need to tell you something.

Bridget: Mom, look, I have another big test tomorrow. I've got to go study. Look, I promise you, I am going to buckle down, okay? This is never gonna happen again. From now on, it's just school and my husband -- nothing else. Sorry. I've got to go.

Brooke: Okay, we'll talk later.

Stephanie: I've been so worried about you. What happened?

Amber: Oh, God, Stephanie. I must be the luckiest woman on the planet.

Stephanie: You and Rick have worked it out?

Amber: He's not leaving me.

Stephanie: Oh, I knew it was going to be all right. I just knew it.

Amber: Yeah, but I'm not out of the woods yet. He's only staying with me because I'm pregnant.

Stephanie: He'll come around. Believe me, he'll come around. He loves you.

Amber: He's very disillusioned, Stephanie.

Stephanie: Well, he has every right to be, doesn't he? I hope you've learned your lesson.

Amber: Trust me, I'm never going to disappoint him ever again. But I still have a lot of work ahead of me. I have to win back his trust and his love.

Stephanie: You will, one day at a time.

Amber: Or one night at a time.

Stephanie: Have you got something planned?

Amber: Of course I do.

Thorne: What's up?

Rick: Well, I'm still married.

Thorne: That's good to hear.

Rick: I guess so.

Thorne: Rick, hey, you're going to get past this, okay?

Rick: I'm gonna have a child. That's the only thing that I'm sure of.

Thorne: So you talked to Amber?

Rick: Yeah, we talked.

Thorne: Did you forgive her?

Rick: I forgave her. You know, I even believe her when she says that she doesn't love him anymore and that she's committed to this marriage, but it's not about that, and it's not about Deacon, and I'm not angry. I'm just -- I'm sad and disappointed.

Thorne: But things will get better, okay?

Rick: Yeah. You know, life goes on, right? And I'm a young guy. I've got a bright future, but I just don't think I'll ever be able to see my wife the same way. I wish that wasn't the case, but it is.

Brooke: You tried, didn't you?

Deacon: Yeah.

Brooke: But you didn't tell her.

Deacon: I couldn't do it, Brooke. I'm sorry.

Stephanie: What have you got in mind?

Amber: Just a special night of appreciation for my wonderful husband, who deserves it. Can you watch Eric?

Stephanie: I can. Does that mean you're taking Rick out to dinner?

Amber: No. I am fixing him dinner here.

Stephanie: I am going to give you a piece of unsolicited advice. I think you'd better go slow with this.

Amber: No. Slow is not my style, Stephanie.

Stephanie: Amber, you and Rick are going through the biggest crisis of your marriage. I do not think this is the time to force the issue.

Amber: "Force the issue"?

Stephanie: Yes, sex -- s-e-X. I mean, isn't that what you have in mind? A very romantic evening.

Amber: Well, he is my husband, and I want to show him how much he means to me and that he is and always will be the only man in my life. I love him, and I want to show him that.

Stephanie: I understand, and you will, but the timing isn't right. Remember, timing is everything in life. I'm telling you, Rick isn't ready for this.

Amber: Well, maybe not, but if that is the case, isn't it up to me, his wife, to make him ready? I think I'm up for that challenge.

Deacon: I tried, Brooke. I tried. I couldn't get her alone. She had her girlfriends over, and the next thing I know, she's taking off to go to school.

Brooke: That's all right.

Deacon: It is?

Brooke: Bridget was just here. I tried to tell her myself, but I couldn't.

Deacon: Brooke, what are we going to do?

Brooke: Well, we can't give up. She has to be told.

Deacon: I know, I know. I've got to be the one to do this, not you.

Brooke: No. No, she trusts you. She thinks that you love her. Look, I should be the one who tells her this.

Deacon: You do that, she is going to hate you. No. No, I'm going to have to be the fall guy on this one.

Brooke: Well, she's going to hate you just as much.

Deacon: Better -- better me than you. Look, I'm not family. You're her mother, Brooke. Don't take this on. Besides, I'm the one who got her into this mess.

Brooke: Deacon, you tried to make it work.

Deacon: Come on, Brooke. I think for the first time, I can actually see just how wrong this was. I see it with total clarity now.

Brooke: Just let me handle it, okay?

Deacon: Why would you want to do that?

Brooke: Because I know what it's like. I've been there. I can't begin to describe how it feels to look somebody in the eyes, somebody who loves you and who trusts you and tell them that it's over, that you don't feel the same way.

Deacon: No. No, that's not it. Brooke, you're trying to protect me. Why?

Amber: I'm having water, but can I pour you a glass of wine?

Rick: You shouldn't have done this, Amber.

Amber: You already had dinner?

Rick: No.

Amber: Well, you have to eat, don't you?

Rick: I'll get something out of the fridge.

Amber: There's nothing in the fridge.

Rick: I'm not ready for this, Amber. I don't know if I'll ever be.

Amber: I don't expect you to trust me again overnight, but you said you wanted to stay married to me. Is that still what you want?

Rick: You're carrying my child. I'm not gonna put you out on the street.

Amber: Well, maybe I'd be better off on the street than living with someone who hates me.

Rick: I don't hate you, Amber.

Amber: Yeah, you just can't stand the sight of me.

Rick: I can't stand the memories.

Amber: What about all the good ones?

Rick:  They hurt more than the bad ones. I'm going to bed.

Amber: Rick -- please just -- just stay and have dinner with me.

Rick: Nothing is going to happen tonight, amber.

Amber: I know.

Rick: Then what's the point? What exactly are you hoping to accomplish?

Amber: I'm not hoping to accomplish anything except just be your wife and cook you dinner, maybe ease your heart a little bit.

Rick: You broke my heart. You are the last person's that's gonna ease it.

Amber: No, I'm the only one that can ease it because I broke it. It's my duty. It's my responsibility. Please just let me do this tonight.

Thorne: Hey. What are you doing here?

Bridget: Working in the boardroom.

Thorne: Next year's business plan? [Bridget laughs]

Bridget: No. Studying for a test. I messed up big time today -- way too much partying.

Thorne: Well, welcome to college.

Bridget: Yeah, well, that was a wake-up call. It's not gonna happen again.

Thorne: Well, that's good to hear. So, how are -- how are things on the home front?

Bridget: Well, the home front is good.

Thorne: Really?

Bridget: Mm-hmm. Deacon's so cute. He's always worried about me. He's sweet.

Thorne: You guys talk a lot?

Bridget: Yeah, yeah. Not enough for him, though. He always wants to talk. Do you believe that? The bad boy turns communicator.

Thorne: What's he want to talk about?

Bridget: Actually, I don't know. We haven't really had a chance to sit down. We've both been so busy.

Thorne: Maybe you should make some time.

Bridget: I will tonight. But it won't be for talking.

Deacon: Brooke, we're talking about breaking your daughter's heart. She thinks this marriage is for real.

Brooke: It's going to be broken no matter who tells her. I just think I can be more gentle about it.

Deacon: No, that's not it. Why are you doing this? Why are you offering to bail me out here?

Brooke: Because maybe I care.

Deacon: What? You think I don't care about Bridget? How many times am I gonna have to tell you, there's nothing I wouldn't do -- there's nothing I wouldn't do to let her forego this pain. I look at her and she's so precious. And she's so loyal and she trusts me completely. And you know what I'm gonna do? I'm just gonna rip her whole world apart, that's what I'm gonna do.

Brooke: Deacon, that's not what I meant. I know you're concerned about Bridget almost as much as I am.

Deacon: What did you mean when you said that you wanted to be the one to tell her the truth because you cared?

Brooke: I meant you. Because I care about you. I know what this is going to do to you. I know how I felt when I had to tell Thorne. You're never gonna be the same. Bridget's expression will haunt you for the rest of your life. I just want to spare you that -- if I can.

Rick: What's next on the menu?

Amber: Oh, well, there is a roast in the oven.

Rick: Okay, well, look, I'll go slice it, all right?

Amber: No, no, no, wait. It's not done yet. You're very uncomfortable.

Rick: This was your idea, amber, not mine.

Amber: You don't have to get all squirmy about it. I'm not gonna bite your head off.

Rick: You know what? I knew this wasn't gonna work.

Amber: You don't have to be afraid. I'm not gonna hurt you anymore.

Rick: You're right. I don't have to be afraid because I don't care anymore.

Amber: But you care about the baby.

Rick: Yes.

Amber: So why don't you pretend you're sitting next to her tonight instead of me.

Rick: Fine.

Amber: What would you say to her?

Rick: I'd tell her that she's gonna have a wonderful life and that her daddy will always love her. And if she turns out to be a he, I'll love her just as much.

Amber: You know what I'd say to her?

Rick: What?

Amber: I'd tell her that she's going to be secure and loved and that she doesn't have to be afraid to look at her mother as a role model, because that's what I'm going to be. And I'm gonna teach her how to handle this crazy world where so much can go wrong and the challenges are so great. And she's gonna listen to me. She's gonna believe every word because nobody has experienced more of the pain and more of what can go wrong than her mother has. And when she gets a little older, and she asks me how to love, I'm gonna tell her with all the conviction in my soul that the way to love -- the only way to love -- is completely, with nothing held back. And to love family above everything else. And someday she'll meet a man and she'll love him with everything inside of her - just the way I love her father.

Thorne: You and Deacon are really that close?

Bridget: You seem surprised.

Thorne: Yeah, well, I guess I am.

Bridget: Why, Thorne?

Thorne: You know how I feel about the guy.

Bridget: Yeah, well, maybe you should get to know him a little bit better.

Thorne: No, thanks.

Bridget: Okay, how about as a favor to your sister?

Thorne: I don't trust the guy, Bridget. I never have.

Bridget: You know, all he talks about is wanting what's best for me. That's his only priority, Thorne, making me happy. And he has -- indescribably. Deacon is never gonna let me down. I wish you could see that. I trust him as much as I trust my own family.

Deacon: That's pretty incredible -- I mean, considering everything that I've put you and your family through. But I think I'm gonna have to handle this one myself. I'm not gonna put you in the middle of this, Brooke.

Brooke: Why not?

Deacon: Because maybe I care.

Brooke: Deacon, I know you care about Bridget, but --

Deacon: No, Brooke. I care about you.

Brooke: Why do we feel this way about each other?

Deacon: I don't know. I've been wondering that all day.
