Jesse: Oh, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry! I begged you to open your eyes. I begged you to take a breath. I --

Brot: Chief, it wasn't your fault.

[Baby cries]

Jesse: What --

Brot: Shh. It's ok. Oh, it's ok. It's ok.

Brot: Someone left her in my squad car. It's ok. The wanted to give her away.

[Baby cries]

Angie: Ellie? Ellie? Jesse, I heard our daughter. I heard her crying. Mommy's here. Jesse, Jesse, talk to me. I need my baby. I need to hold her. Jesse, why aren't you saying anything?

Asher: Whoa. Sorry. You ok?

Girl: No worries.

Asher: Whoa. Hey. Are you sure you're ok? You look kind of out of it.

Griffin: Nice try, but you can't avoid me forever.

Cara: Ok. I get it. Let me have it. It's fine. I deserve it. But wait. For the record, setting you up with Kendall --

Griffin: It's cool. It's cool.

Cara: It what?

Griffin: Setting me up like that, don't do it again, but it all worked out in the end.

Cara: Wait a minute. The date went well?

Griffin: It's not a date, Cara. Serious. Not a date.

Greenlee: Was it really that bad?

Kendall: Huh?

Greenlee: Your dinner with griffin -- isn't that why I'm here? Did you get the answers you wanted?

Kendall: No. But check this out.

Greenlee: Oh, my God, you need to work on your writing. What am I looking at?

Kendall: Ok, remember the problem that we had with marketing, the problem that's been killing us? Well, solved.

Greenlee: You did this all tonight?

Kendall: Yeah, yeah. I got this burst of energy, and I figured I'd come here and put it to great use. What?

Greenlee: Nothing. I just -- you just seem like you. I haven't seen this Kendall in a long time. Did Dr. Castillo do this?

[Baby cries]

Angie: Please, Ellie, it's Mommy. It's Mommy. It's ok. Jesse? Jesse, why aren't you talking to me? Why aren't you saying anything? Jesse, where is she? Jesse?

[Baby cries]

Angie: Ellie, it's ok! It's ok! Mommy's right here! Jesse, I just want my baby! Jesse, please! Where are you? Just bring me my baby! I need to hold her! Oh, God! Ellie, it's ok.

[Baby cries]

Jesse: It's ok.

[Baby cries]

Jesse: It's ok.

[Baby fusses]

Jesse: It's ok.

[Baby cries]

Jesse: Baby, here she is.

Angie: Oh, Jesse, thank you.

[Baby cries]

Angie: Baby's got strength. Our baby. Shh. Mommy's here. Mommy's here.

[Baby cries]

Jesse: How you feeling?

Angie: Oh, much, much better.

Jesse: You had me worried there.

Angie: I can't believe you delivered her all alone.

Jesse: You did all the work, baby.

Angie: No, you brought a healthy baby into this world healthy, healthy and safe.

[Police radio crackles]

Angie: Is someone else here? Is it the ambulance?

[Baby cries]

Angie: Shh. It's ok. Jesse?

Jesse: It's Brot.

Angie: Brot?

Brot: Hey, Angie.

Jesse: Yeah. He heard my call to dispatch, and he came to help. We're still waiting on the paramedics.

Brot: I wish I could've gotten here sooner.

Angie: Jesse, is everything ok? What does she look like?

Jesse: Healthy. Yes, she's healthy.

Angie: She doesn't have your long, dark lashes like I knew she would?

Jesse: Baby, hold on a second. I need to find out where the ambulance is, ok? Hold on.

Angie: You don't know how long I've dreamt about this moment. Huh, pretty girl? It's gonna be all right.

Jesse: What did I do? What --

Asher: Did you get mugged or something?

Girl: I need to get home.

Asher: No, no. There's no way that you can drive right now. You just crashed into me on two feet. Come on.

Girl: No, thanks.

Asher: Hey, if you think I'm leaving you alone in this park, you're nuts. I'll drive you wherever you want to go. We can even take the bus if you want. Come on.

Girl: Fine.

Greenlee: Ok. Details, please. From your mood, I take it you don't think Griffin is dealing drugs anymore?

Kendall: I never wanted to think that -- at least, that's what I told myself. But I know that he is not. After tonight, he can't be.

Greenlee: What do you mean, that's what you told yourself?

Kendall: I think part of me was looking for all these walls to put up.

Greenlee: Because of Zach?

Kendall: Not because Griffin and I are -- we're not anything. We're just -- I don't know. I guess I really needed people to know that, so maybe it meant that I wasn't being unfaithful or something.

Greenlee: I get that.

Kendall: So does Griffin, which is why I think we can be friends.

Griffin: I promised that I'd look after Kendall, and tonight we got to talking about that night in the ambulance.

Cara: What night?

Griffin: Oh, you're so funny. She wanted to know how I could be so sure she'd be ok.

Cara: Of course, you reminded her of your surgical brilliance, yes?

Griffin: No, no. I told her about this image that I had in my head of her reuniting with her two sons.

Cara: You got it deep.

Griffin: No. We got honest.

Cara: Sounds like a romantic evening.

Griffin: Cara, do you not listen to me? Her husband just died, ok? There are boundaries. All I'm saying is she might not need me anymore. My part in all this is almost done.

Cara: Oh, I listen --

[Phone rings]

Cara: And I heard every word. Hmm. Dr. Castillo.

Amanda: I know it hasn't been easy lately, but --

Jake: Get in there.

Amanda: Sometimes I think we just need to get back to the basics.

Jake: Really? You think this is basic enough?

Amanda: I think this definitely qualifies.

Jake: Yeah? Hmm. Well, how about this?

Amanda: Mm. That is just about as basic as it gets.

Jake: That was? Really? What about this?

Amanda: Ha ha! Mm.

[Phone rings]

Amanda: No.

Jake: Yes. I'm sorry. I think it's the hospital. I have to -- Dr. Martin.

Cara: Jake, it's me.

Jake: Cara. What's going on?

Cara: It's Dr. Hubbard.

Jake: What happened?

Cara: I don't have all the details. It's just that she went into labor and didn't make it to the hospital in time for the delivery.

Jake: All right. Ok. I'm on my way.

Amanda: You have to go in?

Jake: It's Angie. She delivered the baby, but it wasn't at the hospital.

Amanda: You make calls. I'll drive.

Angie: Can I tell you a secret? Mommy was scared, so scared. Nobody wants to give birth like this. But if it had to happen, I'm glad that it happened here, because this place is so special to Daddy and me, just like you. So I guess that means it was meant to be. Don't you agree?

Brot: What are you gonna do?

Jesse: Um -- take that baby away from her right now, it would just rip her -- it would kill her.

Angie: Ah. You hear that? Those are sirens.

Brot: Chief, the ambulance is gonna be here any second.

Jesse: I know. I know. I know. Please help me. Help me. Help me. Help me.

Angie: Hello. Hello.

Jesse: I just need -- I need -- I need you to -- I don't know.

Brot: I do. I do. I do. Chief, I do. That little girl didn't have a home, and now she does. She has a great home. I'll take care of everything, ok?

Jesse: Ohh -- go. Go. Go.

Angie: How are you, my pudding pie? You smell so good. Was that the door?

Jesse: That was Brot. He went to go meet the ambulance. How you doing? You feeling ok?

Angie: How do you think I'm doing? Just look at her. How can you ask how am I doing? I'm just wonderful. Wonderful.

Jesse: Any pain?

Angie: I -- it was my back, and then that really one long contraction after that.

Jesse: I guess it was a blessing you passed out when you did, huh?

Angie: Jesse, this is the blessing. This is our blessing right here. Aren't you?

Jesse: Oh, God --

Angie: I love you.

Jesse: I love you so much. You have no idea how much I love you.

Angie: See Daddy? See, that's your daddy. That's your daddy.

Cara: I don't have all the details. All I know is she went into labor and Jesse had to deliver the baby himself. I put a call into the neonatologist and Dr. Hubbard's Ob. They're not in yet, so you and I are gonna have to run point on this.

Jake: Ok.

Amanda: You should go so you're prepared when Angie gets here.

Jake: Yeah. Bye, baby.

Amanda: Good luck, and tell her I can't wait to meet my goddaughter.

Jake: Of course, of course.

Kendall: It's weird. Sometimes it's like I lost Zach yesterday. I wake up in the morning, and I look over on his side of the bed, and I expect to see him there, only he's not. And then it hits me so hard, I can barely breathe.

Greenlee: And the other times?

Kendall: It feels like I lost him the day before yesterday. But tonight it wasn't so fresh. It feels like maybe, slowly, it hurts less.

Jake: Hey. Oh, you always got to keep things interesting, don't you, hmm, Angie?

Angie: We Hubbards like to live on the edge.

Cara: How are we looking?

E.M.T.: Her B.P. is at 90 palp, and she's diaphoretic. She's had one liter of ringer, so far.

Cara: And the baby? How was the Apgar?

E.M.T.: Airway was clear. Apgar on scene was 9. Good skin turgor and muscle tone. Heart rate, 150. Respiration's 40.

Cara: Impressive. All right. We've got a deluxe suite ready and waiting.

Jake: Let's do this, all right? Take her inside.

Jesse: Should I come?

Jake: Only if you want to see my goddaughter.

Cara: I'll take her. Thank you. Sweetheart.

Jake: Ok. Get that? Excuse me. Ok. All right. Hand, Angie.

Cara: Ok, ok, honey.

Angie: Cara?

Cara: Yeah. So far, so good. Let's take a look at you.

Jake: How was the childbirth, Angie?

Angie: You'll have to ask Jesse. I passed out for most of it.

Cara: So the umbilical cord is cut. I assume the E.M.T.s did that on the way over here?

Jesse: I handled that.

Cara: Oh.

Jake: Anything unusual happen, Angie, other than the obvious? Any sensations not attributed to childbirth?

Angie: I was having some intense back pains in-between contractions.

Jake: And now? No?

Cara: Do you think that you were experiencing some back labor?

Angie: I don't think so. I had that with Frankie, and this was different.

Jake: I don't like the fact that you passed out, so we're gonna have a full examination, ok, from head to toe.

Angie: What about the baby?

Cara: She looks outstanding, but obviously we'll run some tests on her.

Jake: You got to leave, Big Papa, right about now. Ok?

Jesse: I don't want to leave.

Jake: Don't worry. Don't worry. We're gonna take very good care of your girls. All right. Hi.

Jesse: I won't be far.

Angie: Ok.

Jake: It's ok.

Frankie: How's Mom?

Randi: And the baby?

Jesse: Oh. They're being examined right now. They're both fine.

Randi: Oh, thank God.

Frankie: And look at you, man. Still standing?

Jesse: Barely.

Frankie: Congratulations, huh?

Cara: You haven't passed your placenta yet, but it should be any minute now.

Jake: I would like to take this little one down to Neonatal right now.

Angie: Oh, no. Do you have to go already?

Jake: I have to go, because the sooner we go the sooner we'll be back. All right, sweetheart. Yes, my love. Ok.

Angie: Listen, you just make sure that you take good care of her, Jake Martin.

Jake: This little nugget is my goddaughter. Of course, I'm gonna take care of her.

Angie: You better.

Jake: Here we go.

Angie: Gosh, I miss her already.

Randi: This must be Ellie. She's amazing.

Jake: We would love to stay and chat with everybody, we really would, but we have some tests to ace.

Jesse: I'm gonna go with you, ok?

Jake: What, to give her all the answers? I don't think so.

Frankie: Plus, by the time you scrub in and all, he'll be done.

Jake: We'll see you in a little bit.

Frankie: Bye. Dad? Randi asked you what it was like bringing your own kid into the world?

Jesse: Oh, my God, it's something I will never forget.

Frankie: Yeah. Ooh. By the way, I got to contact Natalia.

Randi: Make sure you call Brot, because he's gonna want to know, too.

Jesse: He already knows.

Frankie: How?

Jesse: He heard my call for help over the radio, and he came to help.

Frankie: Oh, ok. Where is he?

Jesse: He went back on duty.

Frankie: Oh. He couldn't have contacted Natalia. She would've hit me, like, 10 minutes ago. I'm gonna make that happen. I'll be back.

Randi: Ok, sweetie.

Asher: I can stay with you until somebody gets home. No offense, you still look a little shaky.

Girl: I'm not gonna operate any heavy machinery, just the TV. Now, please?

Asher: Ok. I work for J.R. Chandler. He's kind of the big cheese here in town. So if you need something, anything --

Angie: When do you think Jake will be back with her?

Cara: It depends on how backed up the unit is. Look, I'd like to talk a little bit more about the delivery.

Angie: You sound worried.

Cara: If it's ok, I'd like to feel your abdomen again.

Angie: Oh!

Cara: I'm sorry.

Angie: It's ok. It's just that it's extremely tender. Cara, talk to me. What do you think this is?

Cara: I don't know. Something isn't right.

Angie: You're making me nervous.

Cara: I discovered some clotted blood just behind the placenta.

Angie: How much blood?

Cara: A significant amount, which indicates a clot in the uterus before going into labor.

Angie: That's why I passed out, went into shock from the loss of so much blood.

Cara: And with your history of hypertension, it's safe to assume that you suffered abruptio placentae.

Angie: But you said the baby looked fine.

Cara: She did. She does.

Angie: But wouldn't there be signs of neuro damage? A hypoxic event?

Cara: Your daughter seemed perfectly healthy.

Angie: How is that? To survive that kind of trauma -- most babies wouldn't.

Cara: It's nothing short of a miracle.

Jake: Incoming, just like I told you. We got ourselves a little honor student here.

Angie: Is she ok?

Jake: She passed with flying colors. Are you kidding me? Will you help me? Thank you. There you go. Hold on tight. You got her? They ran another Apgar. She came in at a solid 9. Typed her blood, guess what. She's got Mama's blood. She's O-positive.

Angie: Jake, I'm going to ask you again. Are you sure everything is ok? Sight? Hearing?

Jake: Everything is perfect. Did something happen that I don't know about?

Cara: Apparently, it was a closer call than we thought. Dr. Hubbard suffered a placental abruption. It's absolutely incredible that the baby is fine.

Jake: I guess she's just a very lucky little girl.

[Phone beeps]

Jake: Sorry.

Angie: We're both lucky.

Jake: Yeah, I got to go. Congratulations again, ok? She's perfect. Congratulations. You done good.

Jesse: So, ahem, somebody want to translate that to me? What happened? Non-doctor.

Cara: Ha! Before Dr. Hubbard went into labor, the placenta separated from the baby.

Angie: She began to lose all the life support I was giving her.

Cara: Your daughter beat incredible odds.

Angie: Jesse, come here.

Jesse: Hey, baby.

Angie: Somebody up there was really watching over us. This is really our miracle baby.

Jake: Big news tonight. Angie has her baby. What? Jesse delivered it himself, healthy.

Greenlee: Wow!

Jake: Yes.

Greenlee: That's fantastic!

Jake: It is fantastic.

Greenlee: Tell them "Congratulations" for me, will you?

Jake: I will, indeed. Yes. Hold on a second. I just want to check on you. How you doing? You all right?

Greenlee: I'm good, relieved that Emma's home.

Jake: Right, and how's that going for you?

Greenlee: She thinks that I'm trying to replace Annie, which is not -- I just want things to go back to the way they were.

Jake: And they will. They will.

Greenlee: I know. It's just a phase, right? And besides, I'm too lovable to hate forever, right?

Jake: So lovable. Amen to that.

Amanda: Hey. How's Angie doing?

Jake: She's doing great. Healthy delivery, mother and child are fine.

Amanda: I'm so happy for them.

Jake: Yeah, me, too. I was just wondering, how you feeling about being a godparent? I'm just wondering. You up for the task, Mrs. Martin?

Amanda: I believe I am. How about yourself, Dr. Martin?

Jake: I'm good. Personally, I think they're lucky to have us, but, yes. All right. Come here.

Griffin: I could've sworn I dropped you off at home.

Kendall: Yeah. Thank you. And I thought that you were headed back to the Yacht Club.

Griffin: Uh, restless, I guess.

Kendall: Yeah, me, too. Me, too. Crazy how we both ended up here. Oh! Oh! I can't believe I didn't tell you this. I found a bunch of correspondence from the lawyer handling the probate for Zach's will.

Griffin: And?

Kendall: And the more I went through it, the more confused I got as to why it's taking him so long to settle.

Griffin: Time is money.

Kendall: Yes, yes. Mm-hmm. Exactly. And I think he is stalling on purpose, so I'm firing him. Yeah. I'll go ahead, and I'll hire a great, new replacement. We'll get the ball rolling, we will sell those casinos, and you will have your money for the Miranda Centers in no time.

Griffin: Wow. You don't mess around.

Kendall: Nope, I don't. What's the matter? I thought you'd be excited.

Natalia: I can't believe I have a little baby sister! Now I have another reason to come and visit.

Angie: That's right.

Natalia: Not that I don't already have enough of one already.

Frankie: Hey, hey. Room for one more -- two more?

Randi: Oh, word?

Frankie: Got you. I'm sorry.

Jesse: Hey, y'all.

Randi: Hi.

Angie: Look at this one.

Cara: I'll leave you two to your family, but not too long, because these two have had an eventful day. Excuse me.

Frankie: So I heard you were a rock star.

Angie: No. He's the rock star.

Jesse: No. No, not at all. Not me. Excuse me.

Randi: Angie, I feel horrible. We would've brought something for the baby, but we weren't exactly prepared.

Angie: You're all here. That's all that matters.

Kendall: I was hoping maybe for a little shred of enthusiasm?

Griffin: I'm excited.

Kendall: But?

Griffin: But nothing. My mind's just reeling thinking about all the things that I have to do.

Kendall: You're finally gonna make your dream come true.

Griffin: It's not my dream. It's theirs -- people with no proper health care, nowhere to go if they're sick or in trouble. I get to give them that. We get to give them that. But, first, I have to find the sites. I have to talk to locals, gain their trust, get the community on board with the project, and then I can start building the things.

Kendall: Sounds busy. So I guess it's gonna be "Hi" and "Good-bye," huh?

Griffin: Yeah. Once I leave, I probably won't surface for a while.

Kendall: Right. Ok. I will start interviewing lawyers tomorrow. I should probably go.

Griffin: Yeah. Me, too. You out front?

Kendall: Back.

Griffin: I'll just finish my beer.

Kendall: Ok.

Griffin: All right. Uh, Kendall, "Good-byes" are pretty definite. How about we make it a "See you later"?

Kendall: Works for me.

Amanda: It's kind of late, Cara.

Cara: I know. I'm sorry. Can we talk?

Jake: Is it an emergency?

Cara: No, but it's hospital-related.

Amanda: Maybe the hospital is the best place to talk about it.

Cara: I promise you this won't take long.

Jake: No, actually, Amanda's right. If it can wait, maybe we can just do it tomorrow.

Cara: Yeah. Of course, then. Good night. Have a good night.

Jesse: Somebody just dumped that baby in your squad car?

Brot: The mother left a note but didn't sign it, said she wanted the baby to go to a good home, because she couldn't take care of her. No name, no I.D., just this earring attached to the blanket.

Jesse: How could you not want a baby? I mean, my God. Angela gave up her sight for our baby. What --

Brot: I took care of everything.

Jesse: Where?

Brot: Not far. Want me to take you there?

Jesse: Yeah.

Brot: All right. Let's go now, so you can be back before they know you were gone. All right. Let's go.

Frankie: My goodness.

Angie: Who does she look like?

Frankie: You and Jesse.

Angie: Who does she look more like?

Frankie: She looks like us all. She got a little bit of everybody.

Angie: Does she have Jesse's long, dark eyelashes?

Frankie: Oh, yes. Absolutely.

Brot: I'll give you a moment.

Jesse: I don't have any flowers. I should've brought -- daffodils. Daffodils -- it's your mother's favorite flower. I bet they would've been your favorite, too. I bet you would've been just like her.

Singer: In quiet sorrow lies empty faces

Jesse: I'm so sorry.

Singer: Now of all the times --

Jesse: I'm so sorry for not looking out for you the way I should have. This wasn't supposed to happen. This wasn't supposed to happen like this. This wasn't supposed to happen like this. Maybe you had a reason. Whatever that reason could possibly be, I -- but she's yours now, ok, so please take care of her the way I couldn't, the way I can't. What I did tonight doesn't mean you weren't loved. If anything, I loved you too much and needed you too much.

Singer: To hear another story then prayed aloud and cried alone

Natalia: Look at her little neck moving.

Jesse: And just because your whole family isn't here saying good-bye right now doesn't mean you were loved any less. You were so special, and I will always love you. Always.

Randi: You should be so lucky.

Jesse: I know this lie that I'm telling Angela is wrong, and maybe if I had time to think, things would've turned out different. But you can't turn back the clock. Not now, not ever. When you're hit with something like this, something that rips out your guts, what can you do but find a way to -- find any way you can to pick yourself up and keep going?

Singer: The weak and heavy-hearted

Jesse: Because in the blink of an eye, your life can change to the point that you don't even recognize anything anymore. In those moments, you go with your gut. You have to. Otherwise, you won't survive. All that waiting for things to finally go right, how could they have gone so wrong? Choices still have to be made. Decisions have to be lived with. I will miss you so much, little baby girl. And I will promise you this. Every time this child smiles or lets out a laugh, I will look up, and I will remember you. I will always remember you. Always.
