Boss: Season One [Blu-ray]

  Boss: Season One [Blu-ray]

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 7/20/12

This is a really great drama. It reminds me a little bit of the show "Damages". Both shows have intricately-woven plots and lots of different types of people and personalities, most of them with their own agenda. I think Boss is slightly better in that the plots are a little easier to follow. "Damages" sometimes gives me a headache, trying to follow everything. However, Boss is more male- and sex-oriented.

All of the actors are outstanding, but Kelsey Grammar is especially fabulous as the mayor of Chicago. The writing is really good, and he shines in it. You will not recognize him as "Frasier" at all in this.  The show seems very Shakespearean in many ways. You really won't be sorry you watched, especially if you love great drama. This is one of the best.

The DVD doesn't have a lot of extras. It just has the usual audio commentary, and one behind-the-scenes featurette about the show. I would love to have seen more!

“Kelsey Grammer is riveting”

-Philadelphia Inquirer

SANTA MONICA, CA, May 7, 2012 – Lionsgate releases the political STARZ drama Boss: Season One to Blu-ray Disc, DVD and Digital Download for the first time on July 24, 2012. Nominated for a Golden GlobeÒ for Best Drama – Television Series, Boss: Season One stars Golden GlobeÒ award winner Kelsey Grammer (Best Actor- Television Series- Drama). Boss: Season One will be released just prior to the Season Two premiere on August 17, 2012.

Kelsey Grammer gives an electrifying performance as Tom Kane, the ruthless mayor of Chicago, who will go to great lengths to get the job done - even if it means being involved with fraudulent activity. While Kane struggles to run the city, he must also keep a secret under wraps that could ruin his career. The Philadelphia Inquirer described Grammer’s performance as “riveting,” and HitFix praised his role on the show as “mesmerizing.”

Boss: Season One also stars Connie Nielsen (TV’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”),
Hannah Ware (Shame), Jeff Hephner (TV’s “The O.C.”) and Kathleen Robertson (TV’s “Beverly Hills, 90210,” Hollywoodland), the 2-disc Blu-ray set and 3-disc DVD set contains all eight episodes in addition to special features including episode commentaries as well as a featurette, “The Mayor and His Maker” with Kelsey Grammer and Farhad Safinia. The Blu-ray and DVD sets will be available for the suggested retail price of $39.97 and $39.98, respectively.

Mayor Tom Kane (Grammer) is King of Chicago and he rules his domain with an iron fist.  Deception, scandal and betrayal go hand in hand with Kane’s form of politics. As long as he gets the job done, the people of Chicago look the other way. Despite being the most effective mayor in recent history, Kane is hiding a dark secret. A degenerative brain disorder is ripping everything away from him and he can’t trust his memory, his closest allies or even himself. Watch as Kane viciously fights battles on all fronts in Boss: Season One.
