TV Show Reviews

"Dallas"
review by Suzanne
Wednesdays at 9 p.m. (ET/PT) on TNT starting June 13, 2012
I really loved the first "Dallas" series and watched every
episode when it aired the first time around. I was in high school when it
started and it continued well into the 90's as I recall. It was always a very
good show, even when it got a little in ridiculous one or two seasons.
You might be surprised to learn that it was
not a soap opera when it first started, and J.R. was not the
focus of the show. The episodes were self-contained and the
focus was on Bobby and his new bride Pam. J.R. was just one
of the large ensemble cast. They quickly realized they
should change things, though.
This new show is also very good and it
barely seems as if the show even took a break. Sure,
most of the old cast is older, and they have new characters,
and they get to say some swear words. But otherwise, it's
just as good as, if not better than, the old show.
They have a lot of great plot twists here
and there that you don't see coming. It is a really
entertaining show. The actor who plays J.R.'s grown-up son
John Ross (Josh Henderson) is AMAZING and just really really
great.
Bobby is married to a woman named Ann, and
she has a horrible ex-husband. J.R. is catatonic in a
nursing home when the show begins, but of course that
doesn't last long. I love the way they turned that around.
Bobby and J.R.'s sons are fighting over - what else? Ewing
Oil, Southfork, and women. Just like their dads.
There are four other fabulous things I love
about this show. First, they're not afraid to show people of
all ages, no matter how old they look. Second, everyone has
secrets, just like on any great soap opera, especially
"Dallas". Third, they finally have core cast members who are
Latino, which was sorely lacking on the old show. It takes
place in Texas, in 2012, for god's sakes. If anything, they
should have more African-Americans because Dallas has a huge
black population. And four, they kept the same theme!
If you never watched an episode of the old
show, you should still enjoy this one. They do a good job of
introducing everyone. Anyway, I hope it's a big hit because
it is outstanding and well worth your time. TNT sent me a
wonderful promotional package. It was a nice box, and when
you open it, has a little fold-out thing with photos of the
show and then it plays the "Dallas" theme! Really
cool. And all that is just the DVD holder. It makes a nice
collectible, too.

TNT’s Dallas stars Josh Henderson (Desperate Housewives) as
John Ross, JR Ewing and Sue Ellen Ewing’s son, who is
determined to undermine his grandmother’s legacy by drilling
for oil on Ewing land. Jesse Metcalfe (John Tucker Must Die)
is Christopher, Bobby’s adopted son, who hopes to take the
family business in the new direction of alternative energy
sources. Jordana Brewster (The Fast and the Furious movies)
plays Elena Ramos, John Ross’s girlfriend and Christopher’s
former fiancée. Julie Gonzalo (Veronica Mars) is Rebecca
Sutter, Christopher’s current fiancée, who is trying to find
her place in the vast Ewing family tree. And Brenda Strong
(Desperate Housewives) is Ann, Bobby’s wife, whose beauty
and grace are matched by a fierce resolve to maintain peace
within the family.
“Bringing a show like Dallas into the 21st century has been
both exciting and daunting,” said executive producer Cynthia
Cidre, who took up the challenge of writing the pilot for
the new series. “It would have been very easy for the show
to devolve into camp or cheap melodrama. But instead, we
decided to concentrate on making a smart, passionate family
drama told on an epic scale. We’re especially thrilled to
work so closely with the leaders of Dallas in making the
city a key character in the show.”
From the very beginning of TNT’s new Dallas, it’s clear the
rivalry between John Ross and Christopher is just as fierce
as that of their fathers, especially when it involves the
love of both of their lives, Elena. The intertwining
relationship among the three is a source of constant tension
that could eventually tear the Ewing family apart.
With an increasingly volatile feud now brewing between John
Ross and Christopher, the stage is set for JR (Hagman) to
return to his nefarious ways and rekindle his own
long-standing rivalry with his younger brother, Bobby
(Duffy). As the current family patriarch, Bobby will stop at
nothing to keep the younger Ewings from perpetuating the
battle that nearly brought down the entire family. But when
a medical issue threatens his life, Bobby is forced to make
a tough decision that could forever alter the lives of
everyone he loves. Always ready to stir the pot is Sue Ellen
Ewing (Gray), John Ross’ mother, who hopes to see her son
take his rightful position as head of the family.
TNT’s Dallas will also feature guest appearances by stars
from the original series, including Ken Kercheval as Cliff
Barnes, Bobby’s former brother-in-law; Steve Kanaly as Ray
Krebbs, JR’s one-time nemesis; and Charlene Tilton as Lucy
Barnes, J.R. and Bobby’s niece.
Shot on location in the title city, Dallas comes to TNT from
Warner Horizon Television, with premiere episode writer
Cynthia Cidre and director Michael M. Robin serving as
executive producers. It was developed by Cidre and created
by David Jacobs.
