The show is a thrill-ride, like most J.J. Abrams shows. It
reminds me a bit of "Lost" but also has parts that remind me of "The 4400" and
"Prison Break". This is not to say it feels familiar or derivative. It is
a mystery, and there are some great shocks in every episode. I've only seen the
first two, but both had big surprises.
I love the cast. Sam Neill is always great. They have him hide
his sexy British accent here, which is a shame. I loved him in "Happy Town" and
would rather see him in that, to be honest. He's pretty mean here as
Emerson Hauser, a former guard who's now in charge of finding out the mystery of
Alcatraz. Sarah Jones plays the heroine, Detective Rebecca Madsen. She
learns all about the big mystery of Alcatraz, along with the audience. In some
ways she is a lot like Audrey in "Haven" because she is trying to solve the
mystery, but it has some family ties to her. Helping her out is Diego
Soto, played by Jorge Garcia of "Lost". Parminder Nagra plays Lucy Banerjee,
Hauser's assistant (and possibly his girlfriend). Robert Forster, a great actor
of film and TV, plays Rebecca's uncle, who also used to work at the prison (he's
not really her uncle, but he acts like it).
There are a lot of ins and outs in the story. Some of the
inmates and guards mysteriously disappeared, but now they are returning and
committing crimes - for someone else, not for themselves. The heroes have to
catch them and figure out where they've been and all the rest of the mystery.
I enjoyed the two episodes I watched. If I had time to add
another show, it would probably be this one. You should definitely check
it out. It's worth a look.
