"Rules of Engagement" Review by Danielle 02/08/07

Rules of Engagement cast photo

"Rules of Engagement" is a new comedy on CBS, airing Monday nights at 9:30PM ET. The setup seems like the mirror image of Fox’s "Til Death", with the addition of David Spade's character Russell, the single womanizer who is commitment-phobic.

The two couples are made up of Jeff (Patrick Warburton) and Audrey (Megyn Price) - the married couple - and Adam (Oliver Hudson) and Jennifer (Bianca Kajlich) as the newly engaged couple. Audrey is friends with Jennifer, while Adam is friends with Russell. The two married couples live in the same building and become friendly that way.

The couples are shown in stereotypical ways in the different stages of a relationship. The older couple argues about spending habits and clutter, while the younger male of the couple naively thinks he’d still get his own way once married. Russell talks up being single and getting to sleep around but begins to
consider the good side of settling down when he meets a nice, intelligent woman.

One thing I noticed was that the two male members of the cast that are married are the hunkier types, whereas David Spade's unmarried goofball is the one single and getting the girls. The older couple surprised me in how well they seemed to capture the essence of my parents’ marriage, as they always have fights over money and things that are bought but never used.

The sitcom lacked those great one-liners that you talk about at the water cooler the next day, but I laughed more at the similarities shown in each couple’s portrayal as I mentally compared it to other couples I know in these same stages of their relationship.
