Annual Bauer BBQ

Anyone who watches Guiding Light, whether you are a newcomer to the show or a life-longer, knows we can count on the annual Bauer Fourth of July Barbeque. The party always offers a huge helping of what we love most about the show. Family togetherness and love, drama, and our beloved characters having a good time. The following is some summertime treats and all time favorites that could be served at the Bauer BBQ. Try them out with your friends and family no matter if it is the 4th of July or just any old day of the week.

No cook out would be complete without BURGERS!

Black & Blue Hamburger

Take fresh ground beef (I suggest 80/20) place in large mixing bowl, add per pound of meat used 1 cup crumbled blue cheese, ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon minced garlic, 1 tablespoon McCormick’s Montreal steak seasoning, 1 medium egg, ¼ cup finely chopped onion, 1/8 teaspoon salt (sea salt if available) . Mix together and make patties. Generously coat outside of burger with ground black pepper FRESH if available. Grill to preferred wellness. Best served on a lightly toasted poppy seed bun.

Maple & Onion Mini-Dogs

Start with preferred hot dogs (I always highly suggest Nathan’s or any hot dog that is Kosher for best taste). Cut in half and place in skillet with sliced onions. Brown hot dogs and caramelize onions. Onions may have to be started caramelizing before hot dogs are added. Approximately 7 minutes before dogs are brown to your preference, add 1 cup of maple syrup per 8 hot dogs. Drain hot dogs and onions from excess syrup. For and extra kick of taste, you can add 1 teaspoon of raw horseradish. (This is really excellent if you like horseradish!)

Next warm King Hawaiian dinner rolls just to a warm toasty state, cut diagonally across top of roll and place hot dog half and onions inside roll.

These can be prepared ahead of time and laid on a tray for self service.

BBQ Corn-on-the-Cob

Using fresh ears of corn peel husks back away from kernels but do not remove from end. This should leave you with the husks as a nice handle and the exposed cob, think of it like a carrot.

Brush kernels with melted butter and barbeque sauce. Wrap with foil and grill about 25-30 minutes. The husks will char, but you should be left with enough husks to provide a nice handle. If you plan to prepare ahead of time, which is perfectly acceptable, a nice arrangement would be to line a basket with foil or plastic wrap and place ears of corn kernel end down in basket. The side item looks like a greenery decoration but can be pulled out of the basket and enjoyed.

Also I like to tie off the tips of the husks with a piece of ribbon that matches my occasion.

Baked Beans

Begin with vegetarian canned baked beans. Drain and place in baking dish. Per 28 oz. can add ½ cup maple syrup, 3 tablespoons yellow mustard, & two table spoons of hickory BBQ sauce. 1 teaspoon crushed red peppers can be added if the party would like a kick. Mix thoroughly and bake for about 10-12 minutes. This is a vegetarian dish which will please a lot of people especially if you are having a party. Baked beans are something most vegetarians cannot partake in, so I suggest keeping them vegetarian, plus guests who are carnivores will not notice there isn’t bacon in the beans.

Champagne Cole Slaw

Chop or purchase already chopped cabbage both red and white. Mix cabbage and (per 2 heads of cabbage) 1 bottle of Girard’s Champagne Salad dressing, 1 cup of walnut pieces, 1 cup gorgonzola cheese and ¾ cup craisins mix and let wilt before serving.

Cucumber & Melon Salad

Slice cucumbers (2-3 depending on thickness, eyeball it you want the break down to be 60 percent cucumber and 40 percent melon). Cube fresh cantaloupe (about 1x1 cubes that equates to half of the melon). Place cucumbers and melon in a large mixing bowl.

Add per amount specified above 1/3 cup olive oil, 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper, ¼ cup lemon juice, ¼ cup white wine vinegar, and one half bunch finely chopped fresh mint. Mix and chill for one hour before serving.

Red, White, and Blue Tossed Salad

The night before your event, take cauliflower florets or one head of fresh cauliflower and soak in lemon water with blue food coloring.

On the day of the event, drain and dry cauliflower. Break up into bite size pieces if using fresh cauliflower head. Place salad greens into a large bowl sprinkle with dried herds (your choice, get crazy, it is pretty hard to screw herbing salad greens up). Top greens with blue cauliflower, raw and roasted red pepper strips, bacon bits, shredded white cheddar cheese, and ranch or blue cheese dressing. Both dressings can be and are suggested to be provided on the side. Color blue cheese dressing with blue food coloring and ranch will, of course, be white.

Deviled Eggs Florentine

Boil eggs, peel, and cut in half removing the yolk. Set aside. Sautée fresh spinach with olive oil, minced garlic and chopped onion. If you have bacon grease from something else you have cooked, drizzle it into the spinach. Keep spinach moving in pan until wilted.

Chop fresh mushrooms and sautéed spinach finely. Add to yolks, set aside.

Make one packet of hollandaise sauce (the packet kind that you can buy on the sauce mix aisle). Per two dozen deviled eggs or dozen eggs, since each eggs makes two appetizers, add ¼ cup Hollandaise sauce and spinach/mushroom mix (70% yolk and 30% spinach mushroom) Mix and spoon into egg white . Garnish with paprika.

Egg whites can be died blue and red before filling and serving. Just make colored warm water and soak for about an hour.

Red, White and Blue Chips and Dip

Place blue tortilla chips around or near a white con queso dip (this is white cheese dip that can be bought in the grocery store if you cannot locate con queso white bean dip is another favorite) and salsa and you have a very quick, easy, and inexpensive red, white and blue party favorite.

When preparing for a large party chips and dip is often the least of our worries so I concentrated on simple for this themed patriotic idea but, feel free to email me at for a fresh salsa, white bean, or white queso recipe, if you prefer to work from scratch.

You can make fresh lemonade or use a concentrate or bottled lemonade. Original so you will have a filmy white to work with. Color ice cubes with red food coloring or make cherry Kool-Aid ice cubes to float in pitcher or punch bowl. Serve with Azul Tequila (this is a blue tequila) Your party punch stays true to the Bauer 4th of July theme, red, white, and blue.
