The Devil is in the Details

There's no question that General Hospital has been a better show lately,
since Guza and Pratt have taken over. The stories, the dialogue, the way
the characters are intertwined in each others' lives--all better. And the
show has always had good acting, so that's great, too.
Not everyone likes the fact that the show is centered around mobsters and
mobster-wanna be's like Sonny, Jason, Zander, and Roy, and their
respective love lives. Some people just don't like that it seems to
glorify criminals or that the hospital is no longer the center of the
action (or even the Quartermaines). That's really not going to change any
time soon. For one thing, Maurice Benard is very very popular with fans.
He plays a mobster. There's no way that the show is going to get rid of
their most popular actor or mess around with his character. Even if it
means alienating some long-time fans who would rather see the show back to
the way it was pre-Sonny.
Heck, Benard even survived being part of a super-couple after Brenda left.
It doesn't seem to matter who Sonny is paired with; fans still want to see
him.
Another reason that the show is not going to change is that Bob Guza
obviously likes writing about mobsters and violence. He is a good writer
and has brought new life to the show (yet again), so unless he decides he
no longer wants to write about mobsters, then things are not going to
change.
Having said that, I think there are other things that need fixing in the
show.
Nobody said soaps should be realistic, but fans do look for little details
when they watch a show and they want to see consistency and logic, at
least to a certain extent.
We may be able to believe that people can seem to come back from the dead,
but does it have to happen so often? Just this year alone, Carly, Sonny,
and Brenda have all been presumed dead on the show. GH has a long history
of this happening so maybe they think they're just giving the fans what
they want. I remember back when Robert Scorpio, Frisco Jones, and lots of
other people used to fake their death or come back from the dead on what
seemed like a regular basis.
Of course, you'd have to be pretty gullible to think even for a second
that the show would kill off Sonny when he's still so popular. Or Carly,
who has many fans of her own (from being married to Sonny). We all knew
that Brenda might come back someday, since her body was never found.
But you have to wonder why anyone even bothers to have a wake or funeral
in Port Charles.
Lately it seems like the writers have forgotten some things. For instance,
Alexis' doctor kept telling her that she had a high risk pregnancy and so
she had to cut back on her hours or risk losing her baby. Then out of
nowhere she decides to run for D.A. against Scott. Not only that, but Ned,
who was so worried about her losing her baby, was all for the idea.
Huh???? Where did that come from?
Of course this whole thing about Scott being DA and then this election
campaign, is pretty dumb. First of all, Scott has enough baggage of his
own that he would never get elected to dog catcher, let alone D.A. He's
done many sleazy and illegal things. I'm surprised he still is able to
practice law. Why Alexis would be worried about debating him, I'm not
sure. So she slept with a mobster. Big deal! She's never done anything
illegal or immoral like Scott has. I would think that being a Cassadine
might be much more of a problem to the public. "So, tell me, Ms. Davis,
isn't it true that your father once tried to freeze Port Charles?" Uh,
yeah, that might make me think long and hard about voting for her.
And then this cute little puppy Courtney had a few weeks ago is now a big
giant dog! How the heck did that happen? That little
detail bothers me more than anything else. Let them do Soap Opera Rapid
Aging syndrome to all the kids they want, but leave the cute puppies
alone! The opinions in these articles are those of the writer and do not
necessarily reflect the opinions of The TV MegaSite or its other volunteers.
